Statistics can be used in many ways when taking a look at where a program stands during their season. Georgia Tech is four games into the football season and they are 1-3. Do statistics tell the real story of how the team is playing? Today we'll break down the statistics for all three phases of Georgia Tech football to take a closer look to see if things are as we think that they are.
Scoring - The Jackets are averaging 27 points a game as opposed to 26 by the opposition. One would think Tech might be 2-2 versus the current 1-3 based on the Jackets having the scoring edge. A play here or there in the Colorado and Stanford games could have changed the outcomes. The Mercer and Tennessee games are the ones that outcome wasn't in doubt and gave the Jackets the slight margin lead in scoring.
First downs - The Jackets have 87 first downs as opposed to 82 by their opponents. The opposition has the lead in rushing first downs 43-30 and Tech has the lead in passing first downs 44-31. The final margin has been the Jackets 13 penalty first downs as opposed to 8 by the opposition. These stats show what we already knew about how our defense has performed and how the opposition has prepared for our offense.
Third and fourth down conversions - This is an area that the team needs to improve. The defense has allowed 41% conversions on third down and 75% on fourth down while converting 35% and 50% on offense.
Rushing - As one can expect the opposition has outrushed the Jackets 189 to 126.3 yards per game while rushing 177 times versus 133 for the Jackets. The Jackets have had a 100-yard rusher in the last two games but are still only averaging 3.8 yards a carry will our opponents are averaging 4,3 yards per carry. The issues with the offensive line have seen the Jackets lose 128 yards rushing most have which came as the result of sacks. Georgia Tech has 5 rushing touchdowns as have their opponents.
Passing - Georgia Tech has attempted 27 more passes than their opponents averaging 243.8 yards per game while giving up 192.5 yards per game. The three interceptions thrown by Georgia Tech played big roles in the outcomes of their first four games. Those three were returned for 53 yards. The Jackets have thrown 6 touchdown passes while also giving up 6 touchdown passes. Three of those six were surrendered in the last game against Stanford.
Total Offense - The four game total offensive stats shows very little difference between the Jackets and their opponents. Georgia Tech has run 17 fewer plays, averaged .2 yards more per play and 11 yards less per game.
Scoring - The Jackets have outscored their opponents 108-104. They have outscored their opponents in the first and second quarters white being outscored in the third and fourth quarters. Georgia Tech has 13 touchdowns and 6 of 8 field goals. They have given up 12 touchdowns and 6 of 7 field goal attempts. The two field goal misses changed the outcome of the season opening one point loss.
Red zone - The scoring has also been very similar. Georgia Tech has been successful in 13 of their 15 trips to the red zone. 7 of those 13 scores resulted in touchdowns. Defensively, the opposition has scored on 11 of their 14 trips to the red zone. Six of those trips resulted in touchdowns. The offense needs to find the end zone more often.
