Freshman Report: Breaking down the play of Georgia newcomers against Oklahoma
Summary
Coaching: The Georgia Bulldogs made Oklahoma pay for mistakes again and again on Saturday.
The Georgia Bulldogs made Oklahoma pay for mistakes again and again on Saturday. Chris Cole recovered 2 John Mateer fumbles — one of which he returned for a touchdown — to set the stage for a 41-13 victory for No. 2 Georgia. It was a dominant afternoon for the Bulldogs, which forced four turnovers in total and held the Sooners scoreless until there was 10:26 to go in the third quarter. The game swung on the first time Cole got his hands on the football. Mateer's fumble on third-and-goal was recovered by Cole and returned 85 yards for a touchdown. What had the potential of becoming a 14-7 game with a Sooners touchdown turned into a 21-0 runaway train for the Bulldogs. "Once you get in the flow of the game and you get a 14-point play, that doesn't happen in football much. They're going in, and we score," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said. "It's really hard to overcome that, and it's hard for them, too. I don't know how much adversity we had to face after that, but I do know that our team is getting better." The Bulldogs have gotten their freshmen on the field quite a bit to start 2026. According to InsideTheU's Gaby Urrutia, Georgia has had 1,039 true-freshmen snaps — the most among top 10 teams. When asked what it is about this group that has allowed them to play so much, Smart said two words: "The lead." Georgia played 11 true freshmen in its Week 4 win. Here's a closer look at what each did against the Sooners:
