Appreciate the kind words — but in fairness to this entire thread topic, I remember what it was like to be a student reporter just a few years ago. I worked at the IDS for a bit. Thankfuly Peegs gave me the opportunity to intern with them for three years, so I was afforded an accelerated opportunity to learn and grow in a professional environment.
It definitely took me hundreds of hours of reps to find my voice and writing style. It's not as easy as it looks for young writers. I have empathy for the student who wrote the column being discussed, and I bet he'd like to change some of what he wrote if he could do it over again. All part of the learning process.
