Oh, Fitzgerald has been trying to muddy up the games and it's a good strategy for this MSU team and roster.
MSU doesn't have that much depth, has a history of injuries, and had a game against a physically superior ND team. It's an underdog strategy to limit the number of possessions.
Helps to keep the game closer and then he can point to film where "it's a game of inches". MSU makes one fewer mistake here and there, takes another step in exploiting an opponent's mistake and then it's an MSU win. Being able to show that helps to build belief and buy in for a developing program.
Plus, Fitzgerald should assume that he's got a Special Teams advantage every week. That hasn't exactly been the difference maker we were hoping for, but it also hasn't lost us any games either. Start getting more from Special Teams and that margin of error for the other team gets smaller and smaller.
