Examining Oklahoma State player grades, snap counts in West Virginia win: Part 1, offense
Summary
Pick/market: Oklahoma State's 41-24 win at West Virginia on Saturday left a lot to digest.
Oklahoma State's 41-24 win at West Virginia on Saturday left a lot to digest. Let's start by taking a look at the Pro Football Focus grades and snap counts for the offense, which tell a story quite similar to the one we all saw play out on the field in Morgantown. If you came away from the game thinking the trio of QB Drew Mestemaker, RB Caleb Hawkins and WR Wyatt Young played really well, PFF agrees. Offensively, OSU only used 17 players — and just 14 who played more than eight snaps. We'll examine all of it by position group. Quarterback, running back, receiver Grade: Player (snap count out of 70) 91.0: QB Drew Mestemaker (70) 86.1: WR Wyatt Young (51) 78.1: RB Caleb Hawkins (58) 73.8: WR Terrence Lewis (44) 73.2: WR Miles Coleman (18) 70.4: RB Ayo Adeyi (14) 69.5: WR Justin Bowick (67) 65.0: WR Chris Barnes (21) The take: Not a ton of surprises in grades or snap counts here, other than the limited usage of Miles Coleman and Chris Barnes. Terence Lewis, partially because of his physicality in downfield blocking, was on the field more than both combined. Lewis was in on 25 of OSU's 40 run plays. Otherwise, this seems to reflect what everyone saw on the field. Offensive line 76.7: C Tyler Mercer (70) 70.6: LG Johnny Dickson III (70) 69.7: RT Ashton Lepo (70) 68.4: RG Joseph Hanson (70) 56.4: LT Shaun Torgeson (70) The take: Again, no surprises, though this is the first game the same five offensive linemen have played every snap. As a group, the line did not give up a sack and only allowed two hits on Mestemaker, with three hurries and five pressures.  In the run game, each of them graded 66 or higher in zone blocking, which was the area where OSU had its most success. Only Lepo was above 66 in gap scheme blocking. Braydon Nelson looks to be on track to make his Cowboy debut against UCF on Oct. 10, and it seems most likely that he slots in at left tackle. Tight end 63.1: Morgan McPhaul (8) 60.0: Oscar Hammond (3); Donovan Green (3) 54.9: Carson Kolb (63) The take: Hammond's return was highly anticipated, but he hardly saw the field. Kolb's physicality might've played into the strategy some, or perhaps the staff is just more comfortable with him right now. Of his 63 snaps, 36 were run blocking and five were pass blocking, with 22 in pass routes. We'll see how this pattern continues to evolve as Hammond gets further along.
