Carroll played QB, WR, and DB. He also was an offensive coordinator for a year, though he heavily favored defensive roles (especially secondary).
Saban never coached or played offense. However, he insisted on a running game and was masterful at complementary football particularly when it came to his teams running the ball. It resulted in usually positive field position battles, winning time of possession, and wearing out opposing teams defenses.
Saban’s critique of Sark’s Texas so far has focused on physicality and running the ball.
