The SEC is the best conference this year
Summary
Pick/market: The SEC is not the best conference.

The SEC is not the best conference. It has a lot of really mediocre teams, and then some decent ones, and a couple really good ones. Where it’s strong is it might have only one legitimately bad team & it’s Arkansas.
Missouri & Tennessee are wildly overrated as always. I’ve said this from day 1 but they’re mid tier big 12 teams. Missouri was in a dog fight with KANSAS, and Tennessee has no quarterback or offensive line. I don’t see them beating Arizona, Utah, Houston, Texas Tech, BYU on a neutral field. In the big 12, I see them finishing around WVU
-Kentucky is hit or miss, same with A&M. Mississippi state’s win over Minnesota was impressive, but Minnesota also gets beat like that at least 4 times a year by quality competition & then they beat a pedestrian Mizzou team. So I don’t see them beating the upper big 12 teams I mentioned.
Alabama was outplayed by Florida state until a rain delay, and has been inconsistent. Sam Leavitt can’t throw, Ole Miss has no defense, and Florida is still slightly an enigma. Therefore, if you give me those 4 teams against the likes of Utah, Texas Tech, and BYU, I’m taking those 3.
The only ones I will give you are Texas & UGA. I think UGA is probably my favorite to win the title right now or 2nd behind Miami. Texas needs to get its offensive line figured out, & I still question Steve sarkisian in a big game against a team with similar talent.
I also think you have to consider the big 10. While Oregon hasn’t looked good, they still have an embarrassment of riches in talent & have 2 new coordinators. I’d be willing to bet a lot of money by the end of the year it gels. Ohio state played its worst possible game against Texas & lost by 1, and while Indiana hasn’t played anyone they still deserve to be considered a top team until beaten. The big 10’s middle has taken a considerable hit. Washington is clearly not a good team, and USC looks to be wildly overrated as well. Penn state & Wisconsin are enigma’s in their own rights, so it’s hard to tell. So while I see where you’re going with here, you also have to look at the matchups. The SEC has gotten VERY favorable OOC matchups for the most part against P4 competition including:
Tennessee played 1-3 GT
Alabama played FSU (who’s really bad)
A&M played ASU, who’s probably a 6-6 team right now
Mizzou played the worst Kansas team in probably 5+ years.
Vandy needed NC state to make probably the dumbest decision in college football history to beat them in a down year for NC state.
LSU beat probably the worst Clemson team since Dabo has been there.
& on the flip side, the sec only has a couple truly impressive wins
Texas over Ohio state
Miss st. Over Minnesota
Auburn over Baylor
Ole Miss over Louisville
So taking that all as a whole, I don’t see how it’s definitive without postseason results. There’s just not enough good games against evenly matched teams to make a clear case. I don’t see 4 games as a large enough sample size & that’s part of the issue in college football right now.
