OREGON STATE SPRING PRACTICE DAY 8
Summary
Full-pads practice emphasized tackling fundamentals across all positions; secondary did bag work and high-pointing; DL worked shedding drills; QBs handled wet conditions well.
Date: 4/11/26 Location: Reser Stadium Weather: 54 and rainy Pads: Full pads Music: None PRACTICE OBSERVATIONS With full pads on and the program’s first scrimmage of spring camp on the schedule, Saturday’s practice at Reser Stadium carried a different weight from the start. The intensity was noticeable before the first whistle, and the drill work reflected it. Tackling was the clear emphasis of the day. Across all position groups, coaches were drilling proper breakdown technique—getting low, maintaining leverage, and finishing with a wrap. The focus was most visible with the defensive backs and secondary, who spent significant time on bag work, backpedaling, and high-pointing the football. It felt like a deliberate effort to build the right habits before live contact. The defensive line worked through shedding drills, emphasizing hand placement and closing the gap after the initial contact. Their reps had an edge to them that fit the tone of the day. On the offensive side, quarterbacks and receivers worked through the full route tree—from short quick outs to deep sideline fades. The conditions could have been a factor, but the quarterbacks handled the wet weather well, consistently delivering clean, accurate balls throughout the session. Running backs were incorporated into some of the route work in addition to their ball security reps. PLAYER OF THE DAY Tevita Pome'e Poeme was the most consistently impressive player on the field during the pre-scrimmage portion of practice. He was explosive off the line, quick in his movements, and brought a high level of energy to every rep. In the shedding drills, his handwork and leverage were polished and purposeful. POSITION GROUP OF THE DAY The defensive line set the tone for the entire practice. Their energy was high from the opening period, and they were competing with one another on every rep — physical, vocal, and engaged. What made it stand out was that the intensity didn’t come at the expense of execution. The reps were technically sound while still being full-speed and aggressive. PRACTICE FEEL Saturday’s practice had an edge to it. No music, but the energy was self-generated—players were vocal, focused, and moving with urgency through every drill. The awareness that a scrimmage was waiting at the end of practice created a natural intensity that carried across all position groups. Every rep got full effort, and the transitions between drills were sharp. Coaches maintained a strong balance of pushing the tempo while still slowing things down to correct technique when needed. It was the kind of practice that reflects a program buying into what’s being built—disciplined, physical, and excited about the work.
