The Morning Pitt: What did we learn about Pitt's defense this spring?
Summary
Pitt defense vulnerable—weak DL limits pass rush, portal misses hurt; safety depth concerns; CBs dependent on rush; could mirror early Narduzzi defenses.
Concerned about a defense whose overall effectiveness in defending the pass rests largely on the DL generating a pass rush when the DL is probably the weakest link on the entire defensive unit. The failure to do more in the portal on the DL was a huge mistake. The lack of depth at safety is also a major concern. Brookins may have potential but he’s yet to produce stellar results over an entire season….and his hard hitting increases the injury risk for him….the starter at the free safety position and backups at both safety positions are huge question marks. I believe this CBs are decent but their effectiveness will be tied to the effectiveness of the pass rush because of a system that hangs them out to dry. You combine all these factors and they suggest pass defense could be a nagging problem against better teams. This unit could look very much like Narduzzi’s first couple of defenses during his tenure.
