Washington Spring Football Practice Recap - Day 13
Summary
Gavin Day intercepted pass, improving safety; Deji Ajose best practice yet with TD catch and 25-yard TD reception.
As Dawgman's Chris Fetters noted on the boards in the Live Updates thread, it wasn't a "Chamber of Commerce" day on the western shores of Lake Washington, but it wasn't a bad weather day as the skies were overcast and the temps a bit on the cool side. There were also a couple of visitors up on the south roof as a couple of eagles, perched at the apex of the grandstand, sounded off and looked on during Washington's two-and-a-half-hour practice on day thirteen of spring football.
Here are some thoughts on observations from what we saw...
Gavin Day had one of the big plays on defense, hauling in an interception on a pass from Elijah Brown that was intended for Mason James. The freshman safety has seen his reps increase as spring has gone along. He looks much more comfortable in the defense and seems to be picking things up quickly. Because of that, he's been able to exhibit his ball and coverage skills.
Redshirt freshman wideout Deji Ajose definitely had his best practice as a Husky. He made a nice adjustment on a purposefully underthrown pass to net a touchdown in one-on-on, ball-placement drills and had a 25-yard touchdown pass when Brown found him running away from a trailing defensive back.
Jeron Jones continues to receive reps with the first team. Today, most of his reps with the ones were outside at corner as the Huskies rested Dylan Robinson for much of practice. Jones is big and physical and he understands coverage and rarely gets fooled, even by more experienced wide receivers and quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see how much he plays this fall. Robinson and Emmanuel Karnley appear to be the odds-on-favorites to win the starting jobs at corner, but behind them, it's anyone's job to win. Jones appears to be right in that mix right now.
While things have been up and down on the ground for the Huskies this spring, Quaid Carr found quite a bit of room to run on day 13. Early in practice, during the first team session, he broke off a big run off the left side of the offensive line. On the run he had to make two defenders miss and then showed off his explosive athleticism by accelerating and not being caught until he got to the endzone. He also had a nice physical run inside the 15, taking it up the middle and making a couple of players miss before he powered his way into the endzone.
Rylon Dillard-Allen got a lot of reps with the first team today. He is another player who is a leader on the field even though he's still very, very young. He and freshman wideout Trez Davis met at the goal line with Davis powering in. Dillard-Allen wasn't happy and gave him an extra shove as if to say 'yeah you scored, but get out of here'. He brings an attitude to the deep patrol and helps allow the Huskies to play with an edge.
A freshman who really stood out was EDGE Ramzak Fruean. He showed some physicality in holding the edge, he got a sack on Demond Williams and drew cheers from his defensive teammates. He also was able to track down a running play to the opposite side of the field.
Rashid Williams was up and down during practice. He had a big pass that would have resulted in a first down bounce off of his hands, but he also made a tough catch in traffic for a first down and then caught a 15 yard touchdown on a busted coverage that had the defensive backs talking to each other. Williams is the favorite to win one of the receiver spots, but he needs to be more consistent in his effort and play-making abilities.
Overall, Decker DeGraaf has had a very good spring camp, but he wound up running a lap around the field when he had the ball stripped away after a big throw and catch across the middle. The defense got the ball back and the third-year tight end began his penance for the fumble.
The coaches and players will take the field tomorrow for practice, but it's merely a walk-through and will be closed to both the public and the press.
Friday night marks the end of spring football with the "Dawgs After Dark" spring game that will take place beginning at 6:30 pm.
