Washington Spring Football Practice Recap - Day 12
Summary
Washington spring scrimmage: Demond Williams strong arm (38-yd to Roebuck, 20-yd TD to Rashid Williams) but threw INT; younger defenders impressive.
In the final scrimmage of spring, the Huskies held a two-and-a-half hour scrimmage that totaled over 120 plays. Things were back-and-forth between the offense and defense, but the latter got the better of things with some younger players on both sides of the ball stepping up and making some eye-popping plays. Here's some thoughts and observations from Saturday's practice on the Husky Stadium turf... Demond Williams came out and made some unreal throws early on, hitting Dezmen Roebuck for a pretty 38-yard gain. The throw was perfectly placed and gave cornerback Ramonz Adams no shot to make a play. A couple of plays later, Williams hit Rashid Williams on a back-shoulder throw for a 20-yard touchdown despite outstanding coverage by Dylan Robinson. Things weren't all roses for the second-year starting quarterback as he was picked off by Kayden Greene who took the ball way from Justice Williams in the back of the endzone and he was "sacked" several times on good rushes from the ends as he couldn't find anyone open. Rashid Williams had a solid afternoon. He caught pretty much everything thrown is way and he did his best to make plays when he got some room to run. Along the defensive line, Darrin Conley, who has been very consistent this spring had some standout plays. He had a batted pass and a couple of quarterback pressures before touching down Williams for a sack. He rotated in mostly with the twos, but did get some reps with the first unit defense as well. Aside from a few nice carries by Quaid Carr and a couple of physical runs by freshman Ansu Sanoe, the Husky running backs didn't find a lot of running room. That was partly due to the active defensive front seven, but also because safeties like Paul Mencke Jr. and Gavin Day were creeping up and causing problems. Speaking of Mencke, he was all over the place on defense. He had a batted pass, at least two tackles-for-loss and also forced some plays inside where the linebackers and linemen could make some tackles. Day had an interception and also made a nice open-field tackle on the sidelines against Sanoe right in front of the defensive bench which erupted with cheers and congratulations for the freshman safety. Elijah Durr, another freshman, was able to come up with an interception off of Elijah Brown on a pass into the endzone that was intended for freshman wideout Trez Davis. Former Ohio State wideout Bodpegn Miller had a nice catch down the sidelines from Brown. He beat Greene who was covering him from the slot and he made a nice adjustment to the ball when it was in the air. Sophomore EDGE Devin Hyde had an interesting day. He applied some pressure from the edge and also got in a few scuffles, one with freshmen Dominic Harris who threw him to the ground. As Harris came over to apologize, Hyde slapped him upside the head and got both sides fired up as there were offensive and defensive linemen coming to the aid of each of their teammates. Later in practice, he popped Treston McMillan who was live (so were Derek Zammit and Dash Beierly). The redshirt freshman signal-caller didn't take kindly to that and both started to push and shove before cooler heads prevailed. Redshirt freshman linebacker Donovan Robinson had one of his better practices. He flashed several times with a tackle-for-loss, a quarterback hurry, several plays on the opposite side of the field and a couple of tackles in the open field on running backs and tight ends who could have gone for much more yardage. CJ Wallace, a freshman kicker, hit a 53-yard field goal which appeared as if it would have been good from 58. Tyler Robles, a transfer in from Texas State, also hit his one attempt, this one coming from 44 yards out. Washington will take Sunday and Monday off before returning for practice on Tuesday. They will practice on Wednesday as well, but that practice is closed to the media and public. They will then take the field on Friday night, May 1st, at 6:30 for the Dawgs After Dark Spring Game to complete spring football.
