Washington Spring Football Practice Recap - Day 10
Summary
Demond Williams improved accuracy, threw 25-yard TD to Justice Williams; Johnson (3rd-year) backing up Karnley/Robinson at position.
It was a cloudy afternoon that greeted the Huskies as they took the East Practice Field for Day 10 of spring camp. They team got a crisp two-hour-plus workout in with several scrimmage periods despite that fact that it was just shorts and shells. Here are some notes from today's practice... Demond Williams is still struggling to get the ball out of his hands, but he's definitely improved on his accuracy. He threw into some tight windows and made a pretty 25-yard touchdown pass to Justice Williams in the back corner of the endzone. It was a well-run route, but Demond put the right loft and placement on the pass, drawing a huge cheer from the offensive sideline Speaking of Johnson, he stepped in for Emmanuel Karnley who did most of his work on the side with the trainers and ball machines. Johnson has that length that this staff loves and he's a favorite of the staff due to his work ethic and smarts. The third-year sophomore is in line for lots of reps this fall, but appears to be firmly locked into a backup role assuming both Karnley and the other starter, Dylan Robinson, are both healthy. Ksani Jiles definitely had one of his better practices. He showed the ability to be on his coverages and made plays on the ball when it was in the air. It always seemed like he was around the ball, whether that was in coverage or making a play on a short pass. He should have had an interception and possibly a pick-six, but instead the ball went through his hands and into the waiting arms of walk-on wideout Asa Thompson. At tailback, Quaid Carr got a lot of the reps with the ones. He shows great explosiveness and the ability to make guys miss, but you can also see his inexperience rear it's ugly head when he misses a blitz pickup or a hole and gets stuffed for no gain when there was running room. The offensive line held up relatively well. There was some pressure by the defense, but for the most part, the offensive line gave all of the quarterbacks time to throw the ball. John Mills and Drew Azzopardi are both great leaders for that unit and Kodi Greene is going to be special at some point. He's still got a lot to learn, but his athleticism and competitive nature give him a leg-up on guys the same age. It's been interesting watching Ezaya Tokio take reps at middle linebacker. He makes quick decisions and gets downhill quickly. He rarely gets fooled. It's going to be fun to watch and see what Ramzak Fruean looks like a year from now. You can tell he is still trying to figure some things out, especially playing on the edge, but he's a physical freak of nature and can hold another 25 to 30 pounds pretty easily. Chris Petrilli was really getting after his guys on the punt coverage team. Each of the punters had to hit balls that were landing between the five and the goal line. Two players would run down and they were responsible for downing the ball and not letting it go into the endzone. I would say the coverage players kept it out better than 80% of the time. When a good rep happened, Petrilli doled out the praise, but when there wasn't good communication or they waited for the ball to bounce and it got past them, he had some choice colorful metaphors to throw out. Players not taking part in today's practice included Jayden Limar, Jordan Clay, Kai McClendon, Christian Moss and Geirean Hatchett. Other players who were limited included Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, Rahshawn Clark, Emmanuel Karnley and Jeron Jones. Attendees of note at today's practice were Warren Moon, Hugh Millen, Dick Baird, Yogi Roth and Pat Chun. The Huskies will take Wednesday off and then will return to the field on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
