Summary
John Mills dropped to 335 lbs, feels more athletic; praises 18-year-old OL Kodi Greene as absolute stud.
Last year at this time, John Mills was a 17 year old trying to find his way in the college game. Now he's a leader along an offensive line that has definitely upgraded the talent in the room, but is also very, very young. On Thursday, he met with the media to discuss some of those youngsters as well as how he's reshaped his body since arriving on Montlake...
On his weight and how it feels to be lighter
"I was 335 this morning. It feels more comfortable for sure. I feel more athletic and agile and really a shout-out to the strength staff and the nutrition staff, I'm just super-grateful having TO, LA and Cadillac and all of them, they're just amazing people and helping me keep the calories down."
On how he lost weight
"Just stopping the fast food and sugar, sodas and what not. I like gummies sometimes, maybe some Charleston Chews."
On how much older he is than Kodi Greene and what he's seen from him
"Maybe five months, he just turned 18. He's an absolute stud. I'm so proud of just the way he's come in and worked every single day. He's never taken anything for granted. He's come in and asked all the questions, he works in the weight room and he works on the field. I'm sure you guys can see he's an absolute Dawg."
On how he's related to Greene because he did what the true freshman is doing last year
"He is going through it all and I'm just trying to be there with him, trying to lead him through it and I think I'm doing a pretty good job because, he's balling."
On Derek Colman-Brusa
"Again, great energy dude. He comes in the weight room and works out, he works his tail off and I like him as a person as well, strong guy for sure."
On if he likes seeing so many young players in the two-deeps and what that means for the future
"It goes through coach (Jedd) Fisch and everyone's been working. We're putting our class together for the future and right now, this year as well, and we're putting everyone on notice and I'm excited to see how we are in the years to come."
On playing next to Jake Flores and what he's seen from the first-time center
"I'm just super-proud of the way Jake has handled the situation. He stepped up in a major role. He's getting better every single day. He's asking questions and he's getting extra work in."
On if he's been able to step into more of a leadership role with Landen and Geirean Hatchett out
"I think that we all have different leadership roles, like Drew (Azzopardi) stepping up for sure, Champ (Taulealea), we all lead in our own ways and we're just being vocal and keeping the young guys up for sure."
