Washington Spring Practice Day 8 Recap
Summary
Washington spring practice split between east field and stadium; shells/shorts work; Trez Davis, Logan George took first-team reps ahead of Saturday scrimmage.
Thursday was another one of those workouts for the Washington Huskies during spring football where they practiced half on the east field next to Husky Stadium, and then the second half they went inside to the stadium for what felt like at least an hour of team scrimmaging. It was a shells and shorts practice, so everything was done with keeping players off the turf in mind, and that was doubly true of this particular practice because it was a 'warmup' to their first big scrimmage of spring, to be held Saturday at 11:30 am. During the final team periods a number of players started integrating with the first team as others were left to do conditioning and the like on the sidelines. For example, on offense Jordan Clay didn't suit up so Trez Davis slotted into his spot with the one receivers with Dezmen Roebuck and Rashid Williams. And while Isaiah Ward was suited up and did all the individual workouts, when it came to the team periods it was Ohio State transfer Logan George who took his spot with Jacob Lane at the other EDGE position. They were backed up by Devin Hyde and Ramzak Fruean. The defense was definitely getting the better of the offense early during the team periods, but the offense definitely grew in confidence through the play of the quarterbacks, mainly Demond Williams, Elijah Brown, and Kini McMillan. McMillan hooked up with Justice Williams for the play of the day, a bomb where Williams had to lay out to get it and he was able to over the outstretched arms of safety Paul Mencke Jr. The fumble bugaboo seems to have hit the offense this spring. It didn't really seem to be an issue during the season, but it has reared its ugly head while the freshmen have integrated themselves. The first fumble was by Roebuck after catching a lovely pass from Williams; he was caught downfield and the defense was able to get him to cough up the ball. It was hard to say who forced it but it looked like it could have been safety Alex McLaughlin. A couple plays later, freshman running back Ansu Sanoe put the ball on the turf, and Xe'ree Alexander was on the spot. He grabbed it on the bounce and returned it for a touchdown. After that play, the entire offense ran a lap around the field. During the final team period, it was a dead heat between the offense and defense. The defense was able to stuff the offense at the goal line through a play by linebacker Jacob Manu, but then the second team came in. Led by Brown, they moved the ball downfield and on the last play of practice he connected for a touchdown with freshman receiver Mason James. You could tell that the players are itching for Saturday's scrimmage, as things got a bit tetchy at times. George got after tight end Baron Naone for something during a 9-7 running drill and started pushing him. Right tackle Drew Azzopardi wasn't having any of it and went right after George and the two had to be separated. NOTE: Former UW DB Jimmy Rodgers was at practice today.
