Decker DeGraaf Has Worked A Lot On Becoming A More Well-Rounded Player
Summary
Decker DeGraaf showed inconsistent inline blocking last season; blown assignments fixable; body type struggles vs Big Ten DL; effort never lacked.
I was pretty hard on Decker DeGraaf at times last season but I'm not now endorsing the idea that he was a poor blocker.
What I saw was a TE that was inconsistent as an inline blocker. He went unnoticed when he got his guy blocked. But when he got beat physically or he blew his assignment, it was glaringly obvious to everyone.
As far as getting beat, there were times where he just didn't seem to have the body type to take on Big Ten defensive linemen one-on-one. If it was not enough sand in his pants or a lack of overall strength, there's only so much that can be done in one offseason.
The blown assignments should be an easier fix. I'm not expecting to see any more 'El Toro' blocks this year.
I also think the coaches may have put him in situations where his odds of success were less than favorable. In my mind, some of that couldn't be avoided with the injuries to Quinten Moore and Kade Eldridge. Afterall, you don't want to throw out big parts of your playbook just because of injuries, so you let it roll.
I also want to say that I never saw a lack of effort out of TE Decker DeGraaf.
