And in 2023 UW had 112 penalties for 1029 yards! Clearly teams can be very good even with a lot of penalties.
I'll also point out that although it was Fisch's second year, there were still a lot of new players on the field. It was the first year under Fisch for Carver Willis, Geirean Hatchett, Omari Evans, Xe'ree Alexander, Alex McLaughlin, Anterio Thompson, Simote Pepa, and more. Plus there were a lot of true freshmen that played a lot, and other players that were thrust into playing more than expected due to injuries.
Bottom line is that we should expect fewer penalties this year, but at this point in the season I'm not going to be too concerned about them. I think that there are other aspects (special teams, offensive consistency, etc.) that I'm more concerned about.
