Change on how 5-7 teams would be selected for a bowl
Summary
Bowl viewers matter regardless motivation; earlier bowl time slots get respectable cable numbers.
I cannot answer the sports betting angle, thou I do not think because people watch because they have a bet on the game, their viewership has less meaning, many watch regular season games for the same reason). When the Arizona Bowl was on there were tow other games being played. The Arizona Bowl was also on the CW. The two other bowl numbers New Mexico Bowl: North Texas/San Diego State 1,390,000 and Pop-Tarts Bowl: Georgia Tech/BYU 8,696,000. But in many cases for the earlier bowls they are the only other bowl game on, but the numbers that many get for the time of day they are played cable networks would kill for those numbers for a live program in those time slots. For whatever the reason people watch they watch and I guess I choice unlike others to not turn my nose up to those that do watch or for things I do not care to watch say no one cares because I do not.
