Houston spring game recap, players that stood out throughout the game
Summary
Houston kicker Jonathan Dimas went 5-for-5 (25-40+ yards); Yoakum 4-for-5; Dimas showed 50-yard range.
The Houston Cougars football team capped off spring camp this morning with their spring game at the Football Outdoor Practice Fields. The team started off with special teams, went through individual drills then moved on to one-on-ones and seven-on-seven before moving on to the scrimmage portion of the spring game. Coogs247 was in attendance for Saturday's spring game and breaks down notable players and plays made throughout the day. SPECIAL TEAMS PERIOD - Houston kicker Jonathan Dimas was the first field goal kicker during the special teams portion of practice and went five for five in his attempts with all kicks ranging from 25 to 4o plus yards out. Zac Yoakum went with the second team unit and went four for five on his field goal attempts from the same 20 to 40 plus yard range as Dimas.  - Dimas looked like he could have hit one of his longer attempts from the 50 yard range and was very accurate. - Evan Noel did not attempt any field goals during this period. - DJ Butler, Trent Walker and Paris Melvin Jr. were all in rotation receiving kick returns and punt returns. ONE ON ONE/SEVEN ON SEVEN PERIOD After the completion of the special teams period the team started their normal pregame stretching routine before moving to their individual postiion group work. Once individuals were done the offensive line, running backs, linebackers and defensive line moved to one endzone while the QBs, WRs, TEs, WRs and DB's started at the 50 going to the opposite endzone for one-on-ones. - Latreveon McCutchin and Ashton Porter both won impressive reps during the one-on-one period and was impressed with the different pash rush moves they used whether that be straight bull rush or using speed and quickness around the corner. - Wide receivers Trent Walker and Tyson Turner are explosive out of the slot and won a majority of their reps during the one-on-one period. Walker's speed and play making ability to go along with Amare Thomas is going to be fun to watch next fall. - Tight end Jacory Thurman had a tough catch on the sideline during one-on-ones that caused some commotion from the crowd. - Both transfers Javion White and Jalen Mayo look to be guys who will make a huge impact on the field next fall with each coming up with a few pass break-ups during one-on-ones and the seven on seven period.   - JD Rhym and Will James did not suit up for the spring game which gave younger defensive backs the ability to showcase what they can do and a few made some big plays. Freshman Mudassir Abdullah aka Dassi made some nice plays on the ball during one-on-ones and even came close to having an interception on a great ready on the ball. - Sophomore Zaylen Cormier made the transition from wide receiver to defensive back this spring and had a nice play in coverage during one-on-ones that almost ended in an interception. SCRIMMAGE - The defense put on a strong showing throughout the scrimmage portion of practice holding the offense at bay for most of the period. The front seven of the defense as a whole was impressive against the run today and forced the offense to punt on multiple drives. - QB Conner Weigman did not compete in the scrimmage period of practice along with a few other starters from a year ago. - Both freshman QB Keisean Henderson and redshirt freshman QB Luke Carney made nice reads and throws during the scrimmage but Henderson had the highlight of the day throwing a strike across the middle to transfer wide receiver Muizz Tounkara who took it 50 plus yards for the score. Tounkara is going to be one to watch next fall with his size... 6-3 210-pounds. - Freshman Paris Melvin Jr. came up with a scoop and score touchdown during one of the drives and was explosive getting to the endzone from 25 plus yards out. Melvin was playing a majority of his snaps at nickel and made some nice tackles in run support as well. OVERALL THOUGHTS - Houston looks to be a more complete team this year with a ton of depth at each position especially at wide receiver, offensive line and defensive line. Though some starters did not compete in the scrimmage portion of the game, the talent was on full display from the returning players to the new additions in the portal and even the early enrollees.  - Buy stock in Paris Melvin Jr., Muizz Tounkara, Trent Walker as well as Jalen Mayo and Javion White. All should make an immediate impact on the field next fall.
