No. 1 in the nation
Summary
Turf-safety argument flawed; Field Turf grass-like enough for horses; multiple Pete mascots showcase talents well.
I don’t know that much about horses, but I don’t buy the “horses don’t run on turf” argument. Horses run in literally everything else. Asphalt, concrete, dirt, sand, mud, so why not turf? Some horse races are on turf (which is always real grass). Field Turf is relatively grass-like. It's not like the old astroturf fields that were basically carpet and felt more like walking on a mattress than grass. It doesn’t make sense to me. At one time, Pete had to be horse qualified. I do kind of like what they do now where they have 4 or 5 Petes and each one has his own unique talent that they showcase. For example, one of the current Petes sings and plays guitar and gets featured on our social media a lot. One of them dances with the Sundancers. That’s all cool, but I do miss the Keystone entrance.
Safety is of course always a big concern, but Colorado runs a freaking bison across their field. Texas runs a longhorn steer across. Colorado State runs a bighorn sheep. You obviously have to put certain safety protocols in place so that people on the field don't risk being accidentally run over.
