Nice rundown on the emergence of 13 personnel
Summary
Pitt exploring 13 personnel (1 RB, 3 TE, 2 WR) with portal additions Lagg, Kent, Hunt; lost blocking WR Johnson, need new WRs to scheme effectively.
There was some rumors of Bell playing around with 13 personnel groupings during spring camp (1 back, 3 tight ends, 2 WR). This is a nice breakdown of what a 13 personnel grouping forces from a defense 13 Personnel I don’t know what Pitt’s splits were last year (maybe Chris has a spreadsheet) but I presume it is predominantly 11 personnel (1 back, 1 TE and 3 WR). I think grabbing Lagg, Kent from the portal in addition to Hunt may make the 13 more feasible for Pitt. Interestingly, a lot of the success the LA Rams had from its 13 personnel came from the fact that they have an excellent blocking WR (Nacua). I think we lost our best blocking WR (Johnson) so it will be interesting to see how the new crop of WRs block and/or are schemed if Pitt deploys a 13 package
