What two Rutgers football transfer portal additions on defense stood out to Greg Schiano this spring?
Summary
Davis (edge) and Morris (LB) maximize skill under TJ's schemes; Porter, Blue-Eli (DT), Collier, Johnson (edges), cornerback competition critical; secondary transformation via Ofurie, Sanders.
Kristian, good timing on this article! IMO, both Davis, at the edge, and Morris, at one of the Lb spots, are going have their individual skill strengths maximized by TJ, in his new defensive schemes. Both players have the size, speed, and skill sets to successfully translate to Big Ten competition. These two players, with all the other improvements along the defensive line, linebackers, and secondary, will help lead the resurgence of the Rutgers defense. The other “X” factors on the defense, IMO, will be Porter and Blue-Eli at DT, Collier and Johnson at the EDGES, and then whoever survives the intense competition at cornerback, between Levy, Humes, Jones, Dawud, Clayton, plus Munn, when he arrives. Then, when you factor in Ofurie and Sanders, the play in the secondary is going to be SIGNIFICANTLY different than in 2025. In many of GS’s comments, you can see TJ and his defensive staff, in the very short time they have been here, have made a favorable impression on GS, as well as the players. The Energy levels that they bring to practice, plus the ability to communicate and teach, is one of the CRITICAL factors missing from last year’s spring and fall camps, unfortunately, which led to the abysmal performance by the defense, especially in the early season games in 2025. GS, yes stepped in, but way too late to really impact and change the trajectory of the defensive unit. But, looking back on the 2025 season, GS , to his credit, recognized the problems, and went out and found, then hired TJ as his DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. then, subsequently, all the other pieces could be put in place, to lead, develop, and address the Rutgers defense.
