TCU 2026 spring camp practice No. 14 recap
Summary
TCU spring practice 14: defense dominated; Jaden Craig had rough night with two INTs, no scores for first team offense.
- The Frogs had their 14th practice of spring camp on Friday night inside the Carter. They have one spring practice remaining, which will happen on Tuesday. - This was pretty much a full contact scrimmage. There was some tackling, but there was also some early whistles before kids got tackled. As always, there were also some plays that were blown dead for tackles that in no way would've been tackles in a game. - The defense got the best of the offense today. It was nowhere near the amount of success the offense had in the scrimmage last week. The first team offense got rolling early, but they never put together a score. - The offense only had three scores on the night and all came on field goals by Nate McCashland with the second team offense. - This was the worst practice of spring camp for Jaden Craig. Craig has done a pretty good job of protecting the football all spring, but he was intercepted twice on Friday night and could never really get into a rhythm throwing the ball. He didn't have any big completions downfield. I had a feeling it was going to be a rough night for Craig when early in practice the defensive back covering Terry Shelton fell down and Shelton was left alone wide open running down the field but Craig was unable to spot him. - The coaches did a pretty good job of getting guys in and out of there early and giving a lot of the backups some playing time. Ben Taylor-Whitfield and Jeremy Payne were among the guys that didn't practice long and even Jaden Craig rested a few series. - Jeremy Payne opened practice with a good run, but other than a couple of decent runs by Landon Walker and Joe Pitchford, the run game was pretty much limited. - The defense was very good in run defense. I was particularly impressed with a goal line stand by the defense where the Frogs' offense had the ball inside the defense 5, but they failed to score. - The offense got within the 5 off a pretty nice drive with Jack Daulton leading the way. Daulton displayed his wheels and had a nice run. He also had a beautiful pass rolling left where he found Jacobe Hayes with a 20+ yard pass that put the Frogs within the 5. Earlier in practice, Daulton fired a dart to Braden Bach for a 20-yard gain. - This was Daulton's best practice of spring camp. - Speaking of Hayes, he was very active tonight. He hauled in four catches and also drew a pass interference call on a big third down. - Adam Schobel had an up and down night, but most importantly, he didn't turn the ball over. He had some high passes here and there, but he looked dialed in late in practice with two perfect passes to Hayes on deep outs. He also had a long run that would've been a touchdown in a game (the ref blew it dead when a cornerback barely touched Schobel). He did have a snap go through his hands. Another snap went flying over his head that he could do nothing about. All in all, this was one of Schobel's better practices. - Nate McCashland nailed three field goals including a 41 and 42-yarder right down the middle. - Dane Jones had the catch of the night on a crucial third down when he hauled in a short pass and was able to hold on despite a huge hit from Jacob Fields. - Wesley Harvey got some reps with the first team offense at left tackle tonight. That's the first time I've seen him go at left tackle with the first team. - Cade Bennett got some action tonight at left guard. It was the most he's done this spring. - Keagan Cunningham had a nice catch and run that would've been a long gain in a game. - As mentioned earlier, the defense did a really good job tonight of filling gaps, stunting, pursuing to the ball and obviously creating takeaways. - Michael Short and Jamel Johnson each had interceptions for the defense. Short's came on a bad throw from Craig where it looked like the tight end might've turned the wrong way. Regardless, it wasn't the best decision by Craig. - Johnson completely baited Craig into a throw over the middle. Johnson broke perfectly on the pass and had some nice return yards. - Chad Woodfork got a ton of action tonight. Paul Oyewale was another starter that didn't participate for the entirety of practice. Woodfork had a great tackle for loss on a run play by Payne. - Carter Buck is a grown man. He doesn't look like a freshman at all and physically he looks ready to compete. He had a really nice play when he sealed the edge and was able to get a hand on Walker and bring him down for only a 1-yard gain. Later in practice he assisted on a sack on a crucial third down near the goal line. - Kelten Mickell had a heck of a play getting off a block and meeting Joe Pitchford for no gain on a big third down. - Ryan Yaites had a sack on Schobel during one of the offensive series. He was getting some work at strong behind Johnson.
