CBS's Shehan Jeyarajah Big XII takes ... Not too high on Utah.
Summary
Whitt's "go for it" analytics decisions cost Utah game vs BYU; kicking FGs wins.

Fair. And my apolgies for the "as you seem to want to remember" comment. But that game was actually close last yr. with the exception of about 6 game minutes.
I absolutely accept your assesment of why Utah lost last yr. And I think there is definitely something to that.
It's also true that if Whitt took points even just 2 out of the 3 times he chose to go for it, instead of kick FGs, Utah wins. Even 1, and they go to OT.
I think what bugs me the most about the 'not kicking FGs' is that his excuse was "I followed the analytics". That was weak, IMO.
Now, maybe Whitt also didn't want to win that way - kicking FGs. He has some machismo and likely wanted to win, in a more dominating manner? I firmly believe Utah had a better roster than BYU last season. And he wanted to play bully ball, maybe?
Fact is, rivalry games are typically tough/close, even when one team is far better than the other. Look at THAT analytic, Whitt!!
Again, if he kicks the FGs, Utah wins. Just like the year before, if our D didn't hold their WR at the end of the game, Utah wins. We didn't need to hold him. The zoob QB was dead to rights and couldn't get the ball off anyway. But he did hold. Even if they didn't call it all game.
