Wayshawn Parker Working Towards Becoming the Bell Cow Back for the Utes
Summary
Utah's offense one-dimensional relying on Dev's legs; passing scheme innovations needed to reduce QB hits and injuries.
UtahHick said... (original post) I’m in the Beck supporter group. I think it is fair to ask how he does without Dampier as his QB, but the fact that a true freshman backup QB coul... show more This is exactly what I’m talking about. The numbers on offense were great that game. Watching the game, the Bray sweep 4th down was proceeded by Dev running behind the right side of the line twice in a row (same play concept they ran on the second missed 4th down also). A play that usually works and was great, but again showed to me at least that the offense was a little one-dimensional. And because of that, in the BYU game and for a lot of the season, we saw Dev take too many hits and get hurt. Maybe if the passing scheme was a little more innovative they wouldn’t have had to rely on Dev’s legs so much and he might not have gotten hurt. Also, in the BYU game, the passing game numbers weren’t bad (20/36 for 244 and an INT), but a good chunk of those were in the last 2 drives when Utah was forced to throw. And IIRC Utah actually did really well with highly-contested catches, which weren’t exactly schemed open as much as they were awesome individual efforts by Dev and WRs. Again, Beck was great, I wish he was back this year. But he wasn’t perfect. Were you guys totally satisfied with everything he did? No critiques at all? Passing game met all your standards?
