Notes from Day 2 of Spring Practice
Summary
Wake Forest spring Day 2: Gio Lopez looked comfortable, Vincent Firenze had a diving PBU, and Buom Jock picked off Gannon Jones.
Wake Forest Football held their second practice of the spring today with a large crowd of visitors in attendance. This was the first practice on the brand-new outdoor turf. It was another day with a lot of individual work, so there was only one full period of full team 11v11.
1’s/2’s offensively:
1’s offense was mainly Gio Lopez, Ty Clark, Carlos Hernandez, Jack Foley, Kamrean Johnson, and a mix between Brice Kania, Kam Shanks, and Will Loerzel depending on the formation. OL was (left to right) Eliott Demaine/Clinton Richard/Will Way/Jaishaun Offutt/Tolu Olajide. Offutt the only change from yesterday.
2’s were Steele Pizzella, KD Daniels/Sawyer Seidl, Chase Tyler, Ny Carr, Kam Shanks, and Loerzel/Charlie Wingfield. OL was Ethan Calloway/Ryan Berger/Devin McRae/John Ohnegian/Aiden Martin.
Defense was much more scrambled.
Sevens:
- Gio Lopez in one word: comfortable. He was smooth as butter through his reads and every decision was a good one.
- Vincent Firenze with one of the more impressive PBU’s you’ll ever see with the 3’s, totally hit a superman and batted it down with an extended hand on a dive.
- Buom Jock picks off Gannon Jones over the middle. Great read from Jock, poor decision from Jones.
- Great downfield work from Rushaun Tongue as he neutralizes a beautiful Lopez throw on a right sideline fade.
- Lopez had Kam Johnson for an easy first but it’s dropped.
- Steele Pizzella didn’t look super comfortable on his reads, I’d like to see a little bit more confidence from him. Turned down some open receivers and threw almost exclusively short yardage checkdowns in sevens.
- Lopez and Hernandez have great chemistry. Easy 15+ yard gain as they connect. Lopez comes over to Carlos and apologizes for a high throw (his leadership was palpable today).
- Kam Shanks may be lethal in the slot. He and Pizzella connect in perfect stride and man did he create that separation easily.
- Lopez fits it perfectly through a tight window for Foley and a first down.
Team 11v11:
- Kadear Dembele had a fantastic day. He manhandled his blocker multiple times and would’ve had some sacks if it was a game.
- Grant Lawless fumbles the snap, then he tries to pick it up and ends up having to fall on it.
- Lopez rolls left and escapes Afalava to find Kania down the left sideline for a first.
- Pizzella to Tyler on a cross-body throw for 20+, well thrown ball.
- Grant Lawless with a perfect throw for 35+ to Elijah Otieno. He’s not quite comfortable yet, but the flashes of brilliance are certainly there.
- Lopez stays composed in a collapsing pocket and finds Foley over the middle for 25ish.
- Then Lopez rolls left and takes it himself on a scramble for another first down.
- KD Daniels got the most of the reps with the 2’s and he took advantage of them, but Sawyer Seidl had one rush where he made both linebackers miss en route to a first.
- Pizzella had to scramble a lot today (thanks to Dembele and Walton on the DL), but he evaded well and had one play where he found Kobe Adeleke-Hokes for a massive gain down the left sideline.
- Same as yesterday for Jones and Lawless as they traded reps with the 3’s and 4’s, both had eyebrow-raising moments, both had some unpolished mistakes. They look like freshmen.
- Overall, I’d say the offense won the 1’s, defense won the 2’s today. Lopez was able to make something out of nothing multiple times and he simply didn’t make a bad decision. Meanwhile the DL for the 2’s was relentless and the downfield coverage was tight enough to keep Pizzella from having much open.
