In college football the sample size is so tiny (only 12 regular season games) that ND can get upset -- by mere bad luck -- by some crap team and then never make the playoffs and then never have a chance to show how good of a team they are this season due to how pathetic the schedule is.
Its kind of what happened last season (despite ND being the 4th best team in the country according to F+) they never had a chance to show the country how good they were because of how bad the schedule was.
