Big 12 Private Equity Deal ($30 million)
Summary
Big 12 private equity deal: $30M from Redbird/Weatherford Capital at ~10% interest, repaid via future TV revenue withholdings.
After doing some research on this deal it has some interesting things happening. No school is required to opt in. They have 1 year to decide. Speculation is between 2 and 6 will. Utah has already become involved with Otro capital on their own. The entity is Redbird Capital and Weatherford Capital (cofounded by Drew Weatherford former FSU QB).
It is a 5 year deal and universities pay it back through withholdings from future television revenue to be developed in the 2030,2031 contract renewal. Interest is just south of 10%. They can make as much as 15% max where it is capped. This would come from increased televsion revenues. There will be no equity in any school or affiliates and they will continue business as usual. Nothing changes.
So why would we expect TV revenues to increase significantly? This is what they are betting on. Through a confluence of events something interesting is happening In the television world. Redbird Capital has 15 Billion in their funds. Paramount Global is in their portfolio. Paramount has CBS and they are expected to merge with TNT. Programming already goes through ESPN who places games on ESPN + receiving little coverage. These now will pass through to CBS, TNT and other Turner programing.
The net effect is that as Big 12 schools will be on more and better primetime tv giving them the opportunity to display their improved wares. Better games, better players better conference thus closing the gap between the Big 2. As such, come next contract negotiations the Big 12 should dramatically improve their contracts. Redbird gets a piece of this up to 15% for their 5 year investment. I can find no indication that their is a limitation to what the money is spent on. If there is and you find it let me know where. Otherwise it can be used to improve rosters putting us on an even playing field with the Big 2.
I understand if it works for us they may try it also. By then though we will have made significant inroads to closing the gap.
