BIG 12 SQUAD - Brendan Sorsby may PLAY in 2026 | How this impacts UCF

Podcast Feed Transcript

Summary
Top Betting/Intel Takeaways - This is a Big 12 conference-context episode, not a UCF team-preview; there was no meaningful UCF roster, injury, depth-chart, or scheme intel beyond the title/feed wrapper. - The main football story is Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby's eligibility fight after gambling while at Indiana, with the panel split on whether the NCAA will hold firm or the mental-health framing creates legal pressure. - The panel said the NCAA has historically been strict on gambling, but Sorsby's injunction leans on mental health and fitting in at Indiana, which makes the case harder to dismiss publicly. - One host expects Sorsby ultimately to lose eligibility and enter the NFL Supplemental Draft; another argued the Big 12 needs him to play because Texas Tech without him would weaken the conference perception test. - The panel repeatedly framed Texas Tech's season and Big 12 reputation as materially different if Sorsby plays versus if Will Hammond has to start. - There was skepticism that Sorsby's mental-health argument surfaced only after the eligibility threat, but the panel also acknowledged that real mental-health claims cannot be casually dismissed. - The NIL angle matters: the panel referenced Texas Tech's financial commitment and implied the program has major incentive to fight the case to the end. - Conference impact: any Big 12 team facing Texas Tech should treat the Red Raiders' QB situation as a live power-rating variable until the eligibility ruling is settled. - Utah succession discussion centered on Morgan Scalley. The panel believes Kyle Whittingham likely would still be head coach if Utah did not need to protect Scalley as the successor. - The Baylor/Dave Aranda segment was mostly jokes and coaching-hot-seat chatter; no actionable UCF football information was provided. - Baseball/softball postseason discussion should not be routed into football betting intel. Game / Team Breakdowns - Texas Tech QB: Sorsby is the swing variable. If he is eligible, Texas Tech is treated as a much more legitimate Big 12 contender; if not, the national view of teams beating Texas Tech changes. - Big 12 perception: The panel believes beating a full-strength Sorsby-led Texas Tech carries more market credibility than beating a backup-led version. - UCF relevance: No specific UCF football breakdown was given; this should be used only as conference-context unless UCF is preparing for Texas Tech. - Utah coaching: Scalley was described as the succession priority, with Utah willing to risk moving on from Whittingham to keep the program's next coach in place.

Welcome to the Dose Grande Squad. Jake Hatch of Locked On Cougar talking all things BYU. Cody Stovall, Locked On Oklahoma State, and a few others trickling in over the course of our next half hour together. Drake Toll with you, Locked On Big 12. Thanks for making our shows your first listen every single day. Though we are small today, we are mighty. You get the right three together, and magic can happen. That's written somewhere in the stars. Guys, I love talking Kali about that at BYU. That's good. That's good. Look, this Brennan Sorsby deal has been at the top of the Big 12. I know you guys have studied up on it a bit. And the update this week about his injunction and a mental health side of the injunction is unstoppable force versus immovable object. We'll start there. We'll get into the major storylines of the Big 12, including both Matt Campbell and Kalani Satake opening up to On3 this week about their decisions to both leave and nearly leave their schools. And baseball, softball postseason play is here. Cody Stovall, Oklahoma State is alive in all of it. If you hit subscribe, we can keep our jobs. Here's the update. Brennan Sorsby files an injunction. High-powered legal team, like big-time Jeffrey Kessler is the killer of all things NCAA. He is the nightmare, nightmare, nightmare for the NCAA of the courtroom. And if there's one thing we know that they've been strict about, clear on, it's gambling. You gamble, you're done. And it sounds like written in this injunction that the NCAA is leaning toward Brennan Sorsby being done, that he cannot play next year. But if there's one thing the NCAA also really cares about, it's mental health. Sorsby saying that he had to gamble to fit in at Indiana couldn't find his niche and it just felt right. He wouldn't be bullied and that he could finally have a place to be at IU if he bet on his team to win, that other teammates would respect. He's almost bullied into betting. Guys, the NCAA hates gambling, but they really get stuck with that whole mental health word. Hey, Drake Toll, this is the defense that Pete Rose once upon a time used to get reinstated to baseball. And he's the all-time hits leader in Major League Baseball history. So I'm sorry, Brennan Sorsby. I love you. I understand that you're trying to find any way, any modicum of trying to find yourself and get yourself eligible to play this season for Texas Tech. I think the rules are hard and fast here, and I think ultimately he's gonna be entering the NFL supplemental draft, but that's my personal opinion on that matter. Well, Hatch, but think about this. You know, Pete Rose obviously lives in an era. Like my dad would always be like, Pete Rose, let a man bet on his team to win. There's that old-school mentality of, or you would think of like, my dad, here's the word mental health, that pansy stuff. I'm like, okay, okay, okay. So there was a time two decades ago, three decades ago, where Pete Rose says mental health, and we're like, all right, pansy. Now, mental health, as it should be, is taken very seriously. You throw that word out there, it's tough to fight against. Fellas, I will take this softball you're lobbing up and say that Pete Rose deserves to be in the hall, and Brennan Sorsby needs another year of college football, and I actually do think that we need this. The Big 12 has a perception problem. If anybody beats Texas Tech with any other quarterback running the team other than Brennan Sorsby, people are gonna say, oh, look at the Big 12. They couldn't even beat a Will Hammond-led Texas Tech squad, so the Big 12 is not gonna be any good unless you beat a Brennan Sorsby. Do I agree with his justifications for what happened in Indiana? No, I do not. But I also don't agree with the fact that Cincinnati likely knew this stuff was happening, and they made a point to bury it. Give the dude an opportunity to play again. I don't care what the reason be. But Cody, here's the deal. All the other leagues, and they talk about the integrity of these games being sacrosanct, and that's where this kind of stems from. He bet on his own team. And yes, Drake, he's claiming he was trying to fit in at Indiana, and he was trying to find his niche. Hatch, they were making him do it. They were bullying him into doing it 10,000 times. Yeah, that's why he's betting on Romanian basketball and whatever. All right. Of course, of course. But look, OK, I think Mountaineer Paul has, like I said, we have some characters jumping in and through here. But Paul, you've been pretty clear on Twitter, on your show, about the importance of mental health. So I want to, you know, two things here. One, I really hope Sorsby's not just using this as a shtick. It seems a little fishy. Like, what a time to now bring up you were bullied into doing this. Two, again, that word is the NCAA can't push back and say, oh, it's not a mental health issue. Because when they say that, they're looking at even further lawsuits. It's definitely dicey. I think, you know, because of the climate we live in right now, there are people that are gonna abuse the system, right? Just like with anything else. Not saying that's happening here, obviously. You have to walk the lines with these things. You know, as somebody who deals with real mental health issues, you know, that's working on their mental health issues and different things. Mine's anxiety, so it's a little bit different. But, you know, I think It can be really tough whenever I'm used to having that kind of cast upon me, like, you know, some people don't really know what to believe, whether it's true or not, whether you're just kind of using it. So I get that feeling, like, from the other side when it's not true about you, like when you really are feeling those things. And so it would probably make me pretty mad if that's exactly what somebody else was doing, especially somebody, you know, to be honest, very privileged in the situation they were in. So I think, you know, people make mistakes, obviously, at young ages. And obviously, I have grace for that. But man, you know, mental health is something that, like, I also understand on the same pin that people will kind of defer to that if they're in a sticky situation. And I think you just have to talk about both. You just have to. Both can be true, right? It's, you know, mental health is lied about. And it's also something that's very important at the same time. So just, you have to use your best judgment in each individual situation, and it'll come out in the wash. Listen here, you pretty pirate hookers. I've been an Oklahoma State fan for the last two years. I have been suffering from mental health issues. All right? And you know what I do not have? That's stolen valor. That's stolen valor. I don't have millions of dollars in NIL. He was betting dollars. I was betting 10 cents, right? That's the thing, Cody. Here's the thing. Why is he pushing all this? Oh, wait, he has five million reasons why he was pushing this process. Well, and I would imagine that there's some people at Texas Tech that probably helped him get that figure that are probably like, Dude, we're fighting this thing to the end. I don't care if you've got to go to rehab. I don't care if you've got to claim this massive mental health obstacle. You're going to play on the football field this season because we put the money up for you to do so. And I think that has to factor in this as well. And good on you, Texas Tech, because, again, I think that the outside conferences would talk trash on the Big 12 if God forbid we lost to a Texas Tech team that had Will Hammond on the sidelines instead of Brennan Sorsby. You're like, Will Hammond? He's a pretty talented kid. He's not bad. The rest of the country doesn't. The rest of the country doesn't know who Will Hammond is. That's a great point There's somebody that knows about Will Hammond, it's JT, let's be real. Kyle Whittingham to Kalani Satake to Matt Campbell, all spoke to On3 this week, and the details are damning. Locked On Big 12. Today's show is brought to you by Indeed Sponsored Jobs. This week, we heard from multiple coaches, past and present, in the Big 12. I thought Morgan Scali of the folks who talked to On3 was the big headline. JT, you've covered it well this week. He's not the problem. He's not the reason Kyle Whittingham's gone. Only thing is, if Morgan Scaly didn't exist, Kyle Whittingham would still be the head coach at Utah. He would be because when you have a candidate like Morgan Scaly, you do everything in your power not to risk losing him. And the fact is, even though there was a lot of stipulations in place, had Kyle come back, Morgan would still have a lot of power. By keeping Kyle, they were very much risking losing Morgan Scaly. And when you have a guy like a Morgan Scaly, who I think has the chance to be Ryan Day-like, not national championship Ohio State, but keeping the team where they're at when the last great coach left. Same thing with an Oklahoma at the time with a Lincoln Riley. I think that's what you're talking about with Morgan Scaly. Keep the team where they are. What? Cam, you're muted. Everyone loves Ryan Day, obviously. The Nick Sirianni of college football. So certainly this would work out for everybody who wants a Ryan Day as the head of their program, including Ohio State. You won one conference title. Yeah, thanks for bringing that up, JT. Much appreciated. Dave Aranda outlasted Lincoln Riley. He outlasted Matt Gamble. He outlasted Kyle Whittingham. Mike Gundy. Yeah, pretty wild. Baylor is committed. Who's the old West Virginia guy? Neil Brown. Neilie Brown. I don't think Dave Aranda ever beat Neil Brown. I beat him one time. You did beat him one time. Where? When? I don't think you did. Last time. Last time, 24. I'd like that on the record. Really? On the record? Yeah, yeah. It's part of the streak. That's when they won. That was the fourth out of six straight, so they became bowl eligible. That's right. And they had a report after the game. They were like, Dave Aranda is staying. It was like, oh. All right. You and Drake, Cam. What would it take, ultimately, for Dave Aranda to get canned in season? The greatest scandal of all time. Lose to Tulsa. Don't remember the name. No, he already lost to Tulsa. He lost to Texas State. Yeah, man. And it turns out, they're not even good. Oh, no. Oh, no. You would have to, have you ever heard of Art Bryles? You would have to Art Bryles himself. Whoa. He'd have the worst scandal in Baylor athletics history, which is... A player killed another player. A player killed another player. And the coach tried to... Dave Aranda goes 3-9. They sit down in the room to fire him. The board region is like, you know we had a player kill a player? You're gonna fire this guy? You're really gonna fire this guy? We kept Bliss until midnight. We did everything we could to keep Dave Bliss. After he covered up a murder! Boom, baby. Roll it. There was a much funnier picture I was trying hard to find. It's of Neil Brown. He took a selfie during a workout at the gym. It's really funny. Have you ever seen the jab video before? Sorry. No idea, like, what the hell I'm doing. You know, I have no idea. There he is. Okay, this is great. Coming up, baseball, softball. Are you up yet? Oh, we got a couple good baseball teams in here. Ty, Ty Armstrong. Ty Armstrong, well, his two close and personal friends, he's Ty. Ty Armstrong for Baylor sets a record. Utah has baseball. BYU has baseball. Oklahoma State looks really good. West Virginia looks really good, too. And on softball, we have a super regional representative here. Cody Stovall, Oklahoma State. Stovall, only right to start with you. The Diamond looks pretty good. Yeah, it's a pretty fun time in Stillwater, Oklahoma right now. I think we're in a decent position to at least get in the hosting conversation. I think we'd have to win the Big 12 tournament to get there. But, fellas, I absolutely love the fact that we're starting off the Big 12 tournament against UCF. The, you know, Kansas, West Virginia storylines are absolutely phenomenal. But UCF, they're number one in the conference in team batting average. They're number one in the conference in team ERA. I do feel like that they have some of the best individual pieces. So if we get past UCF, you've got to feel pretty daggone good about the Cowboys making a run at the Big 12 tournament and getting into that regional hosting conversation because we have the facilities to do it. I mean, Paul talked about this before. There has been teams like Dallas Baptist and East Carolina that have been booted out of that top 16 just because the facilities were not quite the same as one of those teams hovering in that 17, 18 range. We can get there. And then in softball, we're having a remarkable time because, you know, going to the super regional, you're going up against Nebraska. You go up against a former Sooner in Jordy Ball, which we've already faced earlier this year. And we beat Nebraska with that former Sooner on the bump. So you got to feel pretty good about going up to Lincoln and stealing a super regional title and making another World Series run. Damn. Cody's already got them there. I love it. I kind of love it. I mean, I feel pretty good about beating Nebraska, I really do. Yes. I think Texas Tech goes to Florida and gets a win. I think Oklahoma State gets a win. I thought that... I think Arizona State's hot enough to beat anybody right now. Task is Paul against Texas, but I think they could beat anybody. What is it? UCF gets UCLA? Whoa, wait, UCF's in the super, man. Yeah, that's rough. Who is that? That's rough on for the late night. Yeah. Baseball wise. Hey, each of you are represented in the Big 12 baseball tournament. Cam, does Baylor have to win that tournament to get in at this point? Yeah. Softball got in with a pretty similar situation. Similar record, similar situation, by the way. Yeah, well, they were two games over, but had a good RPI, good strength of schedule. Yeah, Baylor's probably gonna need to at least make a deep run. How about they get to the final of it, and I'll reconsider. I'm just happy Baylor's pretty decent at baseball again. You went on a stretch there where that didn't make any sense. If they miss the first time in 35 years, they've missed six straight tournaments. So we're not quite where we want to be. Is it at six now? That's a lot of tournaments, man. Yeah, seven years, six tournaments, if they miss. Oh, COVID, yeah. That's fire the other coach territory. That's fire the coach again. That's fire Jim Mora. That's what Steve Saban's had to say. Huh? I like what Steve Saban's had to say about West Virginia the other day playing here. I find it really hard to believe that one of the top three conferences in the country with no doubt and a team that set a program record for conference wins with 21, a team that finishes second in the league, a team that has the best pitcher in one of the top three leagues in the country, is not hosting. We have won every series but two and have multiple sweeps in a Power Four league. It's well respected with good strength of schedule. And I just think that's a great point, obviously, for West Virginia, you know what I mean? I think it's a little maybe undervalued what they did this year because this is not a traditional powerhouse baseball program. And what Maisie and company, my cat's going crazy here, have built is truly impressive. We're really proud of it. We want to do whatever it takes to hold on to the Steve Sabanes guy. Now, well, hold on, Paul. Was he, was, what was he talking about there? He was, they were asking about hosting because West Virginia is technically still viewed on the bubble. And he's like, it's just ridiculous. It's ridiculous that we should be. Hey, hey, even West Virginia hosting should be already a done deal. He believes they should even be super, super regional territory. Top eight, man. Top eight, well, top eight, man, possible. It's possible. You know what I mean? Baylor's 66th in RPI. Oh, you're done. You're done. You're done. Wait, is there not 64 teams? No, they're gonna extend it. That's my next, that's my next push. That is my next push. We need 88. I will be, I will be, I'm going back to Indianapolis and I am handcuffing myself to a tree outside the offices. And I will not eat until we get 138 teams. Maybe then BYU can get in. Let's go. What's great about that is college football goes to 138. They'd make billions of dollars. Baseball would lose billions of dollars. Baseball's just a money sucking sport at the college realm. Oh God. Yeah, unless you're making World Series runs, baseball is a. Yeah, there's like five schools, five or six schools are making genuine revenue on baseball. That's crazy low. And now you're paying, now you're really paying players. Texas, North Carolina, base, Arkansas. Arkansas, LSU. LSU's pretty clear. Ole Miss, you know. Arkansas, LSU, yeah. Well, they may, they may only be SEC schools too. Yes, correct. And it's because of attendance. It's all because of attendance. Not only do those stadiums that we just mentioned hold, you know, 7,000 to 10,000, but they fill them up. They turn them into insane. The only team in the Big 12 that has an SEC atmosphere every weekend seems to be KU, actually. Baylor doesn't have an SEC. What are you talking about? Well, no, no. Kansas made a meme out of it, which is the coolest part. They're like, look, students, baseball sucks. Isn't that kind of fun? They're like, look, so boring. Please show up and take your shirt off. And that's all the students want to do. Yes. Just sell beer and let them take their shirts off. At Baylor, three kids sat on a porch and they're like, no, please, please, please. No, dude, that was our only chance. That was our only chance of getting back. Meanwhile, they'll play a hype video before the game from 20 years ago of kids on that same porch in right field, like spraying champagne when they won a super regional. And I'm like, oh yeah, neither of those things will ever happen again. Christians wait. When you guys talk about just like the lack of baseball money, it is that reminder of why teams pour so much into football because football is the one that makes probably the most money. They get some and then it's crazy to think that these other ones barely get anything. You have a brand new ballpark up there in Salt Lake City, buddy. Come on now. We just built a new one. I know. I said it's a brand new ballpark. If Derek isn't here, can I say something about Kansas baseball? Yeah. Derek, you're in our thoughts and prayers. Nothing's wrong with him. He's just not with us tonight. You guys ever play that game where you do the best three athletes in football, basketball, baseball from your school? Like best pro athletes. Kansas is close to being elite, but you can't name a single baseball player. Fair. I'll hang up and listen. Brian Zepherjohn. Well, I mean, if you got to count their pitcher right now, Vogel, he's going to be a first rounder if you've got to be a great pro. You've got to match up the Gale Sayers and Wilt Chamberlain. That's impossible. Hey, whoa. They have Smokey Joe Wood. No, I think he's just from Kansas, but you can double check me on that. That's the Red Sox single season leader for wins in a season. Bob Allison. Did Johnny Damon not go there? No, he started his career in Kansas City. Oh, Smokey Joe Wood of 1912 World Series. Yes. The Kansas Jayhawk. Oh, there we go. 1912. By the way, congrats, Cincinnati. Cincinnati has the best big three of anyone in the conference. OK I will go with the actual greatest Jewish Major League Baseball player of all time, Sandy Koufax. Well, this has been and always will be Jake Hatch of Locked on Cougars, Mountaineer Paul of, you know, Locked on West Virginia. JT Welsh of Locked on Utes, Cody Stovall of Locked on Oklahoma State, Cameron Stewart of Locked on Baylor. This has been and always will be. We'll see you next week. Locked on.
