Summary
Top Betting/Intel Takeaways - Washington's spring game was treated as limited evaluation tape because the staff split offensive and defensive lines, which hurt offensive continuity and made it hard to judge the run game cleanly. - Biggest positive: Washington came out of the spring game and spring practice with no new significant injury concern noted by the Dawgman crew. - The hosts said the team is visibly bigger, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, which they view as a major year-two roster-building sign under Jedd Fisch. - DeMond Williams and the receivers were not sharp early in the spring game, with several drops that the hosts said had not been common during normal spring practices. - Backup QB evaluation remains unsettled because multiple backups flashed different traits, but the spring-game structure made direct comparisons messy. - Brian Bonner was held out after tweaking a hamstring; the staff did not need to push him in a spring-game setting. - WR Christian Moss tweaked a hamstring early in spring and was not seen much after that, though the staff is described as excited about his upside. - RB evaluation is incomplete because Jayden Limar and Trey Cooley were not meaningfully seen, limiting conclusions about the top of the room. - OL depth note: Garen Hatchett is projected by one host as the right guard starter, with Champ Taelelea likely to play a lot as the first interior reserve. - Defensive front note: Logan George is expected to offer pass-rush juice, and the staff is excited about added DL bodies after injuries forced week-to-week planning last season. - Ryan Walters' defense is viewed as more attack-ready because Washington now has enough bodies to mix personnel instead of patching holes. - Market relevance: Washington's health, size gains, and defensive depth are positives; offensive rhythm and run-game evaluation remain August questions. Game / Team Breakdowns - Spring Game: Purple beat Gold 27-10, but the hosts repeatedly warned that the format made it more of a fan event than clean first-team evaluation. - QB: Williams and the receivers were off early. Backup QB traits showed up, but the hosts did not treat the night as a decisive depth-chart sorting event. - WR: Drops stood out because they were unusual compared with practice. Moss is an upside player but was limited by hamstring trouble. - RB: Limar and Cooley were not available enough for the hosts to form a strong spring read on the room. - OL: Splitting the line hurt continuity. Hatchett is projected at RG, while Taelelea is expected to be part of the rotation. - DL/Defense: Added size and bodies are the headline. Walters can be more aggressive if the front stays healthy and the depth holds. - Injuries/Availability: Bonner had a hamstring tweak; overall spring health was called a major win.
Podcast: Dawgman Radio: A Washington Huskies athletics podcast Episode: DawgmanRadio: Huskies Have Fun, Stay Healthy During 'Dawgs After Dark' Transcript: I'm Kim Grinnell, the dogman.com with Chris Stutter, Scott Echlin. Practice number 15, is that what you would call it? Sure. Sure. Kind of felt like practice 15. Kind of felt like scrimmage 3. Best practice you've ever seen. Lots of stuff you saw today, Chris. Did I? Okay. Oh, well, that was tonight. But, you know, we always say that, you know, we see practices all the time, so we always kind of run a joke, you know. For us, the spring games is a dog and pony show to give something to the fans, and there was a lot of things that they tried to do to just be entertaining. But, I think it's pretty fair to say that a lot of what we saw out here tonight is not what we saw in practice. Yeah, well, I mean, Chris and I even talked about it, went obviously just during the game, but the receivers hadn't dropped the ball very much at all during spring ball that I can remember. I mean, there might have been a drop here or a drop there, but there were at least like five or six drops tonight that just, I hadn't seen a lot of, you know, like, DeMond and his receivers were way off early on. A line to Brown looked horrible. Granted, he had the best day completing passes. What was he? Seven and nine, Chris? Yeah, I don't have the stats in front of me. They were both roughly around 50%. Yeah. In order for an offense to work, there has to be chemistry. And the way they were mixing and matching tonight, it was almost impossible to have any, you know, chemistry. I will say this, along the offensive line, I would agree with you. These are all receivers that he has been throwing to, all camp long. And they, I mean, he and Rishi weren't on the same same schedule. I mean, it just, there was times that it just was not, it did not look good. Hey, Chris, you know, Ryan Walters was on earlier with Softie and they talked about, you know, the game being broadcast on TV and, you know, Ryan asked, it's not the answer. Ryan, if he's been watching the other spring games and he said, of course, if you're an opposing coach watching this, you're anything you would take from it? Probably. I'm sure you can take something from any scrimmage or anything that you see of an opposition. I mean, and I guarantee you that, you know, Ryan Walters said post games tonight that a lot, almost all what they did was pretty vanilla. But I guarantee you, whatever they tried to do, they tried to salt in some stuff to make it so that the opposing coordinators were going to have to work on something. Like, because they showed the double pass that didn't end up being a double pass. You know, they threw out some stuff there. And I think this is just kind of what longtime coordinators do. They will, they know they're being launched. And so they will throw something in there. A lot of teams don't even do a spring game. Yeah. What I mean, it's probably less than 15% that are still doing well. I love the fact that listening to fish talk about it tonight and I didn't really get to the majority of his quotes, but I did hear his opening comments. And it's almost like he's cross-litizing. Like he's almost like, you know, we need to really maintain this tradition because we're like one of the few, like we're like the Marines. You know, we're one of the few teams out there that are still doing this. And we owe it to our fans. We owe it to the parents. We owe it. And I fully agree with all of that. But the way he makes it sound, it's almost like he's been chosen to be on this mission to make sure that everybody gets to see a spring game. If he's here, if Judge Fish is here another 10 years, Scott, how many years down the road does he go? Yeah, we don't meet the spring game. Oh, no, no. I think he will do a spring game every year. I think that's part of his. That's part of what he loves. He's proud of it. And he, like I said, he tries really hard to foster this environment. So I'm saying some of these things tongue in cheek based on what I'm hearing him and the way he's talking and the verbiage that he's using. But deep down inside, 100%, he's right. He's absolutely right. There's absolutely no reason why coaches from coast to coast shouldn't be having a spring game for their fans. There's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't. Well, you say for the fans and you guys are up here in the press box. I'm on the sidelines and the thing that you guys couldn't observe and you couldn't see. Players were having a lot of fun out there. This wasn't intense. This wasn't hard hitting. They were having a lot of fun out there. They were talking smack, giving the loser signs. I mean, they were really talking to each other. So, you know, as much as it was for the fans and the parents, the player seemed to really enjoy it. So I might take Umbrish to the idea that there wasn't a lot of hitting going on. I saw some guys hitting some guys. I'm not saying this. It wasn't as intense as some of the stuff was hitting. I told, I told Scott this when Keating McGoan had the touchdown drive where Julie McMahon scored from the one yard line. But he had engineered that drive. He ran five times in that drive for basically like 29, 30 yards. Every time it had like a third down or whatever he had to convert. I mean, he put his shoulder in the guys. I like he's been waiting a year and a half to do that. I guarantee you, you know, they may look at that film and and Jed might go, you know what? We might want to cool a little bit with the spring game stuff. But there were some guys out there that were playing for camps. You know, they had what? Steak and lobster, baby. Right? That's what it is. Especially a guy like Keeney who missed pretty much his entire senior season due to a broken collarbone. I'll tell you one guy was taking it seriously out there. Wataan went back to back walker was taking it seriously. Well, he had one carry, but it was a great carry when he was six yards worth. He was all in there. No, he did. I mean, he had a really nice carry. But again, you know, you had some of those backup quarterbacks and we talk about the quarterbacks. You know, we've talked about that battle all spring between Eliza Brown and Keene McMillan and Dashfirely for that backup role. You know, and now I think tonight I don't necessarily feel vindicated, but it really does go to show the differences between what Eliza Brown does well and what it could be Keeney McMillan does well. You know, even Derrick's, even Derrick's, even Derrick's, even you could see today the escape the escape the escape ability getting down quick, the speed, you know, all of those guys have a little different thing about them that I think almost makes them a little bit better alternative in the offense that Fish wants to run. Not saying that Eliza Brown can't be a good quarterback in this offense. I just think that when you specifically recruit guys like Keeney and Dashfirely to this system, you're going to get those kind of guys that have better results, I think. Yeah, just a quick note. You know, we saw that Quay Carr was starting back, and then Ansu Sino was probably number two, Ryken Moon and Julian McMahon, by the carries Beck Walker with one. And we didn't see Brian Bonner and Coach Fish was asked about that, and he said he tweaked his hamstring a little bit, so there was no need for him to push it. He was dressed, but he clearly didn't play. Yeah, that's why he didn't play. The backs that we saw Ryken Moon had the best knife. Yeah, he's been a surprise. He's really elevated his game. Yeah, I think he had a really good answer. He said, oh, had a couple really, really nice runs. But yeah, they're not, they're not going to trust it. But for every guy like a Brian Bonner that didn't play that Chris Lawson didn't play, for instance, but Jordan Clay got a chance to get up there. We hadn't seen Jordan Clay really do anything scrimmage-wise in a couple weeks, so when I put out that, you know, I probably thought of his injury, probably wouldn't play, to see him out there was a real pleasant surprise. He more got the only sack of the knife. No, no, no, Elenius Davis got the... Oh, they were back-to-back, but then again, but Fish took that play back. Yeah. So again, it's spring game. I know, I got into Elenius. If you're in this, you're getting your sack. But the thing is, Jordan Clay, I mean, yes, D'Amond had the 43-yard touchdown to, to Rashid Williams, but the best throw of the night was the one to Jordan Clay. That back shoulder throw of the corner of Dylan Robinson. Yeah, I mean, that was, that was a pretty incredible throw. And Clay didn't look nervous on it. He just turned around, bam, caught it right there on the sideline. And I think the play of the night was Donovan Robinson's pick six. That was unbelievable. Yeah, just real quick, you know, on the wide receiver things, you know, Coach Fish was talking about, you know, got some guys that needed to step up and some guys that need to return. And one of the guys he's mentioned, and I can't recall, seen very much of them at all. Maybe it was the first couple practices, but Christian Moss, we just haven't seen him, and I know that they're really excited about that kid. He didn't play at all. He didn't play at all, but has he practiced much? He practiced for a week or so. No, his second practice, he tweaks his hamstring. I don't remember seeing much of him. He did it, I watched it. I got it on film. Yeah. When I was recording a position drill with the wide receivers and he comes up lane. So it was like an Amore that was not the position? Yeah, sadly it was. I hope for his sake that he doesn't have the same kind of issues that Omar Evans had. Because that guy's got the potential to be a big piece. Absolutely. Well, they wouldn't have brought him in otherwise. Yeah, so that was the guy they mentioned. And then again, when we take a look at the running backs that we've been able to see, we haven't been able to see Jayden, Leemar, or Trey Cooley. Right. And then I'm looking around on the sidelines. Yeah, those are two upperclassmen that shit out a lot to the room. So if those are your two top running backs, and I'm not sure that convinced that they will be, but then you've got a quick car in there and then big things expected from the bottom. So big things expected from Brian Bonner. So it's going to be interesting. It was also interesting. You know, Jed Fish talked about they have basically three months to get a lot bigger. You know, and that's the thing he's trying to do is get these guys bigger. I don't know how much bigger you can get in three months. I mean, that's re-Alexander said it took him four months to add 20 pounds. Well, it depends on the body types. That is on the kid. Because Ryan Walters talked about, he was asked about Gavin Day and he said that they've already put 15 to 20 pounds on Gavin Day. And they've had him since what, January? Yeah. And then I think Brian Monner is the guy that needs to add, you know, add some bulk. He's not going to play. Well, I was going to say like... Ideally, you shouldn't play this year. Now, the X-Factor in the group is going to be Jordan Washington. It was great to see Jordan out there today, but he still has a brace on his neck and you just don't know how that's going to be. Absolutely surprised if he played in the first half of the season, I sure. I asked if there was any update or, you know, if they've come to any decisions on that. And he said that basically it's going to take till July 1st and then everybody will get together and map out his future whether it's playing or not. But... I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. But I mean, we've been doing this a long time, Chris. How many times have we seen a player with a neck brace on? I can't remember the last guy who had a neck brace, whether he came back and played or didn't. I don't, I can't think of one. I know they've been. I know they've been. Clearly they've been. I just can't remember. I was reminiscing with one of the guys. I don't remember. I don't think you were at the practice. I think it was me and Dave and we were at a practice and Juan Garcia, the center went down. Okay. And I think it was a lot of fun. And they brought... You were screaming, right? Yeah, they brought... Well, for a little bit. They brought the ambulance out on the field and they fully covered him with the tarp and we're all looking at each other. Is he dead? They fully covered him with the tarp, you know. So I just can't ever remember seeing a player in a brace like that for this long. I don't... Well, we mean this long. It's been a few weeks. I can't remember it going a couple weeks. Oh, okay. I think, you know. Again, like I said, I guarantee you there's been guys that have had hurt next before. I couldn't even tell you the last time I remember one, whether they came back and played or didn't play. Anybody jump out at you today? I thought Gavin Day jumped out a little bit. No, Gavin, yeah. I mean, Dylan Robinson was going to be the MVP in the first quarter or whatever. I mean, he had a pick and then he had a fumble return for touchdown on the blown catch. The muck and recovery for a touchdown. It was a muck, yeah. But it was a muck by Mason James. I don't know what he was thinking on that one. He dropped an intercept. Another one too. Well, Donovan Robinson did. Donovan Robinson could have had two picks. He had the 55 yard pick six. So then it was Donovan Robinson probably was the MVP. Darren Conley should have had a pick. Yeah, and Darren Conley also had a TFL. Yeah, Ramsak at TFL. Ramsak Flash. And in Brendan Volter said of all the guys in all of spring, he was probably the one defensive player that like splashed the most. So you don't know what to expect from him. Well, also guys are live. So it's hard to tell. I mentioned this a couple of times, but you know, we started talking about some of these guys, like Dylan Robinson, Donovan Robinson. There are Ramsak, Freud, and Davenay. These guys are young. Yeah. They're athletes. You can tell they're athletes. They're young. They're rangey. I mean, you look at Donovan Robinson compared to a Jacob Modem or a Buddha, a look. I mean, they're just different body types. Then you look at Donovan Robinson compared to like the Zaya Tokyo, the latest linebacker they recruited. Those guys are a lot more similar or the Zagreus Randy Salle. Very similar. So you can tell the kind of guy they're going after now compared to the bodies that they had to work with that they got through the portal. It's very different. And like you said, when fish talked about, they still have time to get bigger, faster, stronger before the season starts, before camp. That's what he's talking about. He's talking about making sure that those athletes that they've recruited, those guys get bigger, faster, stronger. Because again, Gavin Day, if Ryan Walters is true and he's added 15, 20 pounds, he's going to be hitting the season at what? 225? Yeah. Also, just the guy who's put on the weight, you know, just when he came here, he said he was what? 212 X realityander. And he's up to 240. And I talked to him after the game. He's big. He was a part returner tonight. I know. I just kind of laughed about it. He also was a fullback. I don't know if you noticed that. I didn't see that. On the touchdown drive with Julie McMahon, he was the upman for two of those plays. They didn't score. And then the one play, when he goes out, then they score. I asked him. I said, you know, just, you know, if you're back there returning a punt and you guys are up, I said, you're going to fair catch. What do you think he said? No. But here, the hard part again, and it goes back to why it's tough to evaluate the running backs and fish. He talked to a bottle of this stuff post game. We'll have the quotes up soon. But he just flat-out said he goes, when you draft guys and you have split lines, you have split defensive lines, you have split everything, it's just hard for the offense to have continuity. And to really, so you kind of hamstrung with the offenses from the start. Because the way they did it, if people saw it, if you divvied them up between the left side of the offensive line and the right side of the offensive line, it was basically like one team had the one team. One team had the ones on the left side and the twos on the right. And then the other team had the twos on the left and the ones on the right. So it just, they were trying to keep the duos together. They were trying to keep some continuity there. But I was telling Scott during the game, I saw Justin Hilkamah play right tackle. And then I also saw him play left tackle. And I saw him play left guard. And I'm like, we never saw Hilkamah play anything but right tackle all spring until tonight. Which punter hit the punt that Mason James couldn't figure out with the swirling win and it probably could have hit an airplane he would hit it so I, who hit that punt? Was that Hunter? I think that was done. I think that was done. Who's done had a really good night with that? Yeah, he boomed the 59 yarder to X-ray Alexander and that turned into a 39 yard net. I know people like to hear about guys. They like to hear about the players and the individuals who do it. And then the guys that we just haven't seen. So I just wanted to take a minute and talk about some of those guys. Logan George, you know, we've seen a little bit of this. Scott, you know, tell people a little bit about Logan George. You mean history? Yeah, just the point of player he is. He was bigger than I thought. He's basically going to be a lot like Zach Derphi but maybe a little bit better technically. And so he'll get after the quarterback a little bit more. He was at Idaho State and finished. I think it was like in the top five or ten in the country in tackles for loss. He had 15 and a half. His sophomore year there, Richard sophomore year there. Then he goes to Ohio State, comes out of the portal, washed and offered him out of the portal. He decided to go to Ohio State. He played what? Couple games there? He played a couple games there but didn't do much because he was dinged up. He shows up here. Washington really is excited about him. I think he can do some stuff but he just hasn't done very much yet. Another guy's kind of a clinic and we've been talking about him doing the dirty boxing. I talked to him a little bit on the sidelines. He said he's lost 40 pounds. And I said, how much do you weigh now? And he said 330. He asked him what he wanted to be at. And he said about 310. But I mean like I said, that kid just looks powerful as hell. We haven't seen him play that yet. He smiled when we talked to him on the sidelines. This is Mississippi State. And started as a true freshman in the SEC and then blew out his knee this time last year. And I'm pretty sure he had a setback. That's why he missed. That's why he didn't practice. Because he had told me before he showed up when he signed with Washington in December. He told or I'm sorry not. It was January. Sorry early January when he signed with Washington. He said to me that I'm already running. So I'm planning to be available for spring ball or at least take part in the second half. And I was like okay and then he shows up and he's got a huge knee brace on and he's limping and everything. And I just was like wow okay. But I've got to believe that he had a step back. If he's healthy he's a big piece to the defense. You would think but I mean who's he gonna replace? Who's he stepping in for though? You've got six guys that you can rotate right now. That's a gift. Well you've got success. You've got four more coming in. Three more coming in. Yeah. Oh yeah. They're all they're all trepress. Yeah. So you don't expect those guys to play. But you're just you're literally just adding bodies to that room. By the way, Safta Amalu on the sidelines before the game. Talk to him for a second. He's up to 295. And he is solid. So he's gonna I'll tell you what the guy is super raw. He's gonna have to figure out a lot of different things. But my goodness that guy is built. Definitely. Right. So I'm dunking this here too. I did not see him. So yeah. Jen talks about him being there. But two running backs we've talked about. We haven't seen Christian Moss. Who else is sitting out that we maybe anticipate that be somebody who's gonna contribute. He's a freshman. I'm sure he's a redshirt. But is there anybody we've missed? Well, why did you ever watch? Because Lawson didn't play. No, I'm talking about emotion. We haven't been able to see in a spring ball. Well, we've seen about half. Yeah. Okay. It's a spring ball. We've I mean, I didn't see. Did Bob Penn even get in today? I don't think he did. Even though he was dressed. He was dressed. So he's not ever done. It was someone we didn't really see today. And we only saw him in bits and pieces this year. Trying to think. You know. I mean, we saw Garen Hatchet. We saw Garen Hatchet for about a week of for about a week of practice. Cold Dietrich. Would you say he's the sixth offensive lineman? No. No. I think it's whoever loses the battle between Garen Hatchet and chat. I was gonna say I'll answer that halfway through training camp in August. I'll let you know. But I mean, if I'm projecting right now. I think it's gonna force us coming for fall. Okay. If I'm projecting right now, I think Garen Hatchet is the starter at right guard. But Champ Taelelea is gonna play a lot this year. I think he's the first interior guy off the bench, and I think that Colt Dittrick or possibly Justin Helkhama or Fossella are going to really be battling for that first tackle off the bench. Have we seen champ on the left side? No, not the mind. I mean, maybe they subbed him in, but not that I remember. Yeah. How hard is that to go from right side to left side? Try doing something that you're used to doing to right side and try doing it with your left just as good. I saw landed hatchet doing it, snap of the ball. So next time you're in a force-on and you've got a guy that's left-handed, try using one of his clubs and swing it to see how that works. I try to. How to go? I've got left-handed golfers. I never know where to stand, and I'm always standing in their way. I'm just telling you, it is not... So in other words, it's not good. Now these guys are athletic, they're young, they're elite athletes. I mean, not all of them are, you know, some guys who are a little more a leader than others. I got a leader. No, but... What about the elite? Yeah. But, you know, there's some guys who have more of that elite athleticism than the other guys, but all of these guys are elite athletes. So if they work at it, they should be able to get stuff down. They're not talking to a bunch of 15, 60 year old guys like us trying to have us do something. So I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm just saying it's not the easiest thing in the world. Recruits of note that you saw? Recruits of note. Well, you guys kind of talked about, you know, we already talked about it. What are the committed guys who were here? Because I saw a shoorzel, I saw Adi Yang. I did not see shoorzel. I saw shoorzel was there. Okay. I did not see him. So I saw... His fair is on the stage. I know. I saw Adi Yang Yang, I saw Ta-amalu. I saw... Those are the three that I noticed. Well, those were 2026 guys. No, no, I don't. I mean, I'm not saying it's... And then Kim said Rajan Rush. Rajan Duncan. I did not see him. And then from as far as the 26th class, I did not see Zarek Sidney or Blake Raskoff, but I've heard that they were both... They both told me they were coming. So I've got to believe they're going to be here. They were here. Saw Zach Albright, saw Brelan Pope, saw... Those guys are all 2027. Yeah, those are all 2027 guys. So they are still in high school, you know. And then, you know, other guys that are worth talking about, saw Jacoba Doyle here, he's going to be a big target for the Huskies. Right now it's Washington, Oregon battle. I saw the Kitty on a Tupu, the 2029 kid out of Puyallup. He's a... He's a really good looking player. So we'll have to see how things go with him. Trying to think who else. There's Michael Ross, who I know the coaches like a lot. There's a linebacker from Dom Bosco back in New Jersey who came out Washington. It's currently his only offer that I'm aware of. He might have one from Temple, but I didn't see it announced. But he... His name is Michael Botaresco. I believe is how you say his last name. Bartaresco, something like that. Anyway, he was here. Oh, Nebraska. I thought that was a parietal of mine. No, but anyway, he's... There were a lot of guys on the sidelines before the game. Jimin's is another one. He's an up and coming 2028. Oven to the linemen. Josh Christensen was here. Yes, definitely. Yeah, he is. He's got a good size. He says 6-6. I could see that. I could see 6-4 to 6-6 somewhere in the name. That's his entire total? I talked to a total was there. And he and I were texting with each other and he said he's close to setting up in a picture visit with Washington. We'll see. Sounds like it's going to be a Cal U-Dev battle for him. So Kim, I was wondering, I obviously, Mark Roon was here to sound the siren. Do you say Marcel Rees was here? Are any other four players that you know from the sign? No. Okay. Cameron Ellis, Sarah. Well, the players are already on staff. Yeah. Who's the left tackle? It's always here with us. Oh, jeez. He just made me blow it. The one from Hawaii that we always see with this little guy. Oh, Mike and Hach. Mike and Hach. Michael is here. He's always here though. He's... He lives in Bellevue, right? Yeah, he works. Yeah, it works right in Bellevue. Yeah, no. It was good. It's Friday night, Chris. Let's get out of here. Wrap it up. Okay. Yeah, it was really... We were listening for... Well, no, because now you can say, well... Go ahead. Go ahead. Everything in Chris's. No, it's good. Well attended game, I would have said 10 to 15,000, probably in that range. And, you know, maybe U-Dev announces 25,000, but I think it's about 10 to 15. It was a good night for football. Not very much when Kim said it sprinkled a little bit, but... I didn't even know. They were going to say the weather forecast basically said no rain whatsoever. And then... But I thought they got some good work in. I... For the next time, I'd really like to see them not split up the offensive lines. I think that would really help. I think put the... Number one offensive line is run together the whole time, put them together, put the number two offensive line together, and then maybe sprinkle in some of the other guys. You know, the third team dies or whatever. And then you could do the rest with the other guys. I don't really care. But I would have liked to see DeMond Williams be a little sharper. I would have liked to see them get some stuff going on the running on the ground. But overall, it was just kind of a fun. The corgi races were what got everybody hyped up. It was like... And, you know, it was just kind of a fun way to end spring. The biggest takeaway, and I put it in my wrap, my game wrap or my practice game wrap, was that they walked away with what looked like no significant injuries. Nobody got hurt. From tonight, as well as spring ball in general, that I can remember that... I got it on the tour of Washington. Yeah, and that one was kind of flooky. But other than that, they came away relatively healthy out of spring, and that's all you can really ask for. Wrap it up, Chris Futters. Yeah, I was going to say it's interesting because Scott mentioned now that you would like to see the ones versus twos, ones versus ones, one and twos versus twos. I get it. Part of the reason why I think they do this is twofold. First of all, like I said, is it uncomfortable? Well, that's part of it. Big things uncomfortable for them. They got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. And a lot of it is playing into the guys they may not normally play with, because they're not in the ones with the twos or what have you. And so that also allows those guys, the coaches to see some tape in case, because Ryan Walters talked about it. Right now, he feels the defense is really poised to do some real attacking this fall because they have the bodies in place now, whereas last year with injuries kind of necessitated, that they had to almost kind of go week by week to game plan certain things because they didn't necessarily know who they had. Well, this also gives them some opportunity to put some things on tape where they've got guys put together on tape where maybe normally they wouldn't be playing together, but maybe injuries might necessitate a Donovan Robinson plan next to a Jacob Monet or a Zaydars Randy Salet and Zaya Tokyo having to play together sideways off. Well, this may give them some options to try to do that. And the second thing that I think they get from it, even though in theory, I fully agree as a fan. I'd want to see ones versus ones, two versus two. But the other thing I'd say is it doesn't really render the tape meaningless from an opposition point of view. But when you look at the personnel and you know where you're normally going up against, when you see those guys running certain plays and things like that as a coordinator, you're like, is this really worthwhile? Because I know the guys that are normally going to be running this thing aren't those guys. So what are we really getting out of it? Last thing, I should have added this during my segment, my portion here. The coaches on Monday, no rest for the wicked. They're on the road. They're out on the road. Yeah, this is the big recruiting time. I mean, you're already seeing all these other schools that are already out on the road. Washington is, I think, probably the last one that can get out on the road. Right now, they're still top 10 for 2027 recruiting rankings. And that's, I have what, 11 committed kids right now? 12 committed kids. Wait, Valbright. And you probably think they're going to be about 20 to 22? I think it's going to be 22 to 22. That's what Jed Fish said. They want to stay in that 22 to 21. So essentially by the time they hit the road again, they're almost halfway through. If you really look at the numbers, which is fantastic. We haven't even hit this part of the recruiting cycle where we see, we'll see 10 more commits. And that's right after official visits. And so just to let people know, obviously Scott put the game wrap together, I'm going to put stats out. We're going to put this podcast on. Very, very unofficial stats, you know, passing, receiving, what have you. And we're also, we're going to be giving the tackles for loss and sacks as I was able to put them together in the interceptions. Because there were the two interceptions for the Robinson's. But overall, I thought it was a really well done game. They had 65 play. Sorry, Kim. Am I keeping you up? Yeah. Okay. 76. 76. 76. 76. 76. I should 76 trombones. Yeah. No, but they evenly pretty evenly stood up. I think it was 39 for one side, the purple had 39, 37, I think for the gold. And overall, a lot of stuff that was out on film. I think they're going to get a lot of good work out of it nonetheless. But like Fish said, this is. Another beginning for them, where now the offseason is huge for them for some of these younger guys that really impressed like a Gavin Day, or a Ramsak Fruen, or a Mason James, or whoever you want to mention. These guys have got to get bigger and faster because they've only been a part of a major college weight room and nutrition program for a couple months now. So the hard work begins again for them just as well as what you just said, Scott, with the coaches out in the crudy trail. Another spring ball in the books when we take a look at what Jed Fish inherited. And when he got here, it rebuilt the roster. And then you take a look at what he was last year. I thought it took a definite step forward. And if you take a look at the third spring practice under Jed Fish, I think it's obvious that this is a lot better team than we've seen here with Jed. Well, hopefully it'll show up in the win totals, but the team has definitely gotten bigger. That's the big thing. The biggest takeaway for me this spring is just how much bigger this team has gotten, especially along the offensive line and the defensive line. Remember a couple of years ago, just that offensive line? I mean, it was ragtag. Well, that's just because they didn't have any big numbers. I know. With this stupid way, they knew the portal. Yeah. So, you know, it's a lot bigger, stronger, faster team. So football never sleeps. You know, talk to John Richardson. You say they hit the recruiting trail. He's going to try to go to a couple of his kids games tomorrow and then he's out on the road, you know, no rest for the wicked for these guys. So, may is a busy recruiting month and the busy recruiting pretty much goes into what the second week of June Scott. What do you mean? Just when the recruited coach, the coaches are only on the road through the month of May. Right. So then, and then we have camps and stuff like the Huffman or the Avery Huffman classic showcase that they do. And then the Husky, I think on the 31st, they have Washington Top Dog Camp and then they have the O-line camp later on. So, they don't call them rising stars anymore. They don't. But it starts slowing down when? The third weekend of June is what it is. So, they have visit weekends on the fifth and the fifth and the 19th, the 12th, they are not doing. That's Father's Day weekend. I think they try to basically do as much as the July off as possible. Yeah. And so, even though spring ball is over, even though it's not in season, they're still going to be a lot going on at Dogman.com with recruiting and then a whole other topic. We might have to do a podcast on the basketball team with the transfer portal, Danny. Sprinkle has got some work to do on that. And if anybody wants to search their cushions for some NIL money for Danny, he can really use it. So, anyways, for all of us at Dogman.com, I'm Kim Grenlands, along with Chris Fetters and Scott Eckland. Go, dogs. Show notes: Buoyed by some stellar defensive play, the Purple Team beat Team Gold 27-10 in the annual 'Dawgs After Dark' Spring Game at Husky Stadium Friday night. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - were on hand to check everything out and talk about the stars of the night, as well as talk about some of the players we didn't get to see as much of. And there was also talk about the format of the game, how the team was split up via a draft so it wasn't best on best, twos on twos, etc... and whether or not other teams would get anything out of it while scouting them as opponents. Scott offered up a quick recruiting update on the players that were seen there, as well as what the UW coaches have on their plates as they enter a very busy May evaluation period where they can hit the road on search of more 2027 recruits for their class, as well as lay the groundwork with future classes. And then the guys offer up their final thoughts on the game, on spring in general, and what the Huskies have to do in the offseason this summer to really hit the ground running when August training camp arrives. audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
