UPHEAVAL: Kansas State Wildcats REPLACE Bryce Noernberg, Special Teams Set for Major FIX

Podcast Feed Transcript

Summary
### Top Actionable Intel - Kansas State is putting a major focus on special teams after Bryce Noernberg left the program. The host views the change as potentially necessary after return-game ball-security problems last season. - Noernberg had a 99-yard kickoff return TD, but the staff also had to live with multiple fumbles. The new staff appears willing to reset the return job instead of preserving the old role. - Kick returner is now an open fall-camp battle and a real field-position/turnover variable for K-State. - The host does not view Noernberg's departure as evidence that Collin Klein is losing the locker room. He framed it as a byproduct of new-staff roster management in the no-spring-portal era. ### Kansas State Position / Depth Chart Notes - Return game: Sterling Lockett is the obvious punt-return candidate and could be in the kick-return mix. - Return game: Jay Harris was floated by others as a possibility, but he has no college kick-return history. - Return game: Brandon White had only two career kick returns, and Texas A&M transfer Isaiah Williams had three for limited yardage, so no candidate is proven. - OL: John Pastore is viewed as the safest returning starter at LT. Tanner Morley is expected to fit at LG, while center remains a question with Delvin Morris as the working projection. - DL/Edge: Wendell Gregory is the most exciting portal edge addition. Elijah Hill, Jordan Allen, and Travis Bates were also discussed as part of the edge rotation. - CB: Zashon Rich is expected to remain a major piece after rarely leaving the field last year, but the staff still has to sort out CB1/CB2 around Donovan McIntosh, Caleb Patterson, and Jason Prevord. - Safety: JUCO DB Damian Miller, listed around 6-3/6-4, said coaches told him his chances to play right away are high. His size/physicality make him a fall-camp depth-chart name to watch. ### Schedule / Game Notes - Host said the Nichols game may not reveal the true defensive-line rotation, but the other non-conference games should show how K-State plans to rotate edge and interior defenders before Big 12 play. ### Market Relevance - Positive signal: clean return-game reports and a settled kick returner would remove a hidden-yardage/turnover liability from last year. - Negative signal: if returner uncertainty or fumbles continue, K-State's special teams could again swing close games the wrong way.

Head again to 2026. You are locked on Kansas State, your daily podcast on the Kansas State Wildcat, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Yes, welcome in. I'm your host Christian Rao on today's show. We're going to break down the newcomers and the goers, the decamets for Kansas State. A couple happened over this past week. We're going to talk to the depth chart because I do think there are some things to discuss on this show, things to pay attention to heading into the summer before we do some deep dives on that. Maybe do a little blanket conversation. We're going to start with special teams. We really haven't talked a lot of special teams on this on this show this spring so far because there really hasn't been too much of a story. But that has changed this week. We're going to talk about that on today's show. Make sure you hit that like and subscribe button right here, bringing you locked on Kansas State. Kansas State Wildcat covers like nobody else right here on the show. And the reason we talk about the special teams on today's show is because Kansas State wide receiver and kick returner, Bryce Nernberg, has appeared to leave the program. And he left the program after the spring and it sounds like there was a disagreement between Nernberg and the coaching staff, the brand new coaching staff, of maybe him getting playing time. And we didn't hear from Bryce, but there was a Facebook post which now seems to be deleted by Bryce's father, Scott Nernberg. And I'm going to read you what it said. And it said, quote, it was an amazing couple of years in Manhattan, but then D1 college football did what it does. New head coach Colin Klein brought in all new coaches and players, paid them accordingly. And Bryce found himself at the bottom of the depth chart, not wanting to start over again as a true walk on freshmen. He basically told them to kiss his A S S. Well done, Bryce. I'm so proud of you. You sit up to the system. D1 athletics is a very sad state. It's times like these you make, it makes you grow as a man. Love you number 21 and support you 100%. A lot of things to take from this one, this is obviously a parent supporting their kid. No doubt about that. Good for them. I'm a parent. I would do the same thing. Uh, important side on the other side. This is a brand new world of college athletics. One special teams was terrible last year. And unfortunately, Bryce Nureberg was in that situation. Yes, he had a kick return touchdown. No doubt about that. That was exciting. But there was also many fumbles that happened under Bryce Nureberg last year, 16 attempts, 464 yards on his kickoff. One was that 99 yard touchdown for return, but there was also plenty of fumbles to talk about as well. Kansas State's taking an approach to improve special teams. They lost people in the portal. Players could have left in the portal. They didn't have to stick around. And instead, they go a different direction. It sounds like that's going to be an improvement on special teams, at least they focus on improving in special teams. This is one of those bittersweet things where you remember here from Chris Klimann over and over again, when they talked about the fumbles of Bryce Nureberg about how he is absolutely gutted. And then Chris Klimann continued. He said it multiple times in pressers where he felt for the kid. He wanted him to, you know, get back. He was excited for him to bounce back. And you could tell that they were really trying to get him to find him way his way back because they believed in him. The old staff did. Not sure if that was the case with this new coaching staff. And it sounds like that was the case because they're moving in a different direction. He didn't get the chance to maybe potentially get the N.I. L dollars he felt he deserved. And they are going a different route, which to the kick return spot, which seems like that might be a good decision for Kansas State heading into the new season. And then they also brought in many players in the transfer portal at wide receiver. So it sounds like he got buried in the depth chart. And unfortunately, there is no spring portal. So him leaving the team makes you wonder what happens to his collegiate career. It might just be over. I'm not really exactly sure how that will work. Maybe it just means nothing at D1 level. We'll find out in the future, but it sounds like it won't be with Kansas State. Unfortunately, that's just the way the cookie crumbles when it comes to these worlds of N.I.L. in athletics. And I'm not going to try and push him down any farther than it is. And but this isn't anything brand new. It's happening in the big 12 multiple times. We just saw this happen with our farm again, rival with Iowa State, where there was a article that was posted online about something that Jimmy Rogers said about a current running back on the roster saying that he needs to produce more if he wants to contribute to being getting playing time. And next thing you know, he leaves the team. He was a great great with high school numbers. Didn't get a chance to prove himself last year. I was state. He red shirts. He sticks around under the new head coaching of Jimmy Rogers. And then in spring ball, they don't work together. And then he leaves the program. So this isn't anything that's tied just to Kansas State. This isn't anything to tell you that Colin Klein is losing the locker room. That's probably the farthest from it. It's probably showing that unfortunately, he's cutting loose weight. He's getting rid of the things that has to happen in this world of college athletics where there's no spring portal. This is probably one of those answers that probably would tell you that would if there was a spring portal. Let me get let me kind of change my words here. If there was a spring portal, this is probably something that doesn't go in a conversation to where you see a parent saying he told Colin Klein that kisses a s s. It's probably just Nuremberg entering the portal. It's probably the coaching staff saying, Hey, I think you'd be better off if you enter the portal. Go find yourself a different spot to get playing time because you're not going to find it here. Those conversations happen and those happen this past off season. Maybe they had a conversation with Bryce and said you have an opportunity to compete. Let's go for it. And it didn't work out. He lost that competition and instead of his family and taking it the professional way that decides to take it, in my opinion, which is a unprofessional way and saying that they told him to kiss his a s s. I don't know. Either way. That's how it goes. That's a downside of not having a spring portal. But I think that the downsides are very small compared to what the other things are. Imagine how many players could have left elsewhere with the Baron Morton thing. Could we have lost the quarterback with some of the other situations happening around college athletics? We saw it happen last year with the potential of us talking about Adrian Johnson potentially leaving to Tennessee. That never happened. But that drama certainly was unfolded for about a week. Could you imagine if there's a spring portal this year with the Texas Tech scenario going on at bread and soresby? It's just one of those things that just doesn't happen. So what does it mean for this kick return? Who will take it over? Well, I'm trying to figure that out to be completely honest because there's not many players on this roster that have too many kick returns experience. Even the transfer portal is coming over. Now, you can go with Locket and Locket is probably most likely to be your punt returner just to see you also take kick returns. That seems pretty likely, right? This is something that might make you think that might actually happen. And then you wonder about some of these other transfer portal additions. I was having a conversation with some friends and thinking about who could this possibly be with? First name popped up, of course, is somebody who's really popping out of the page and Jay Harris. Could Jay Harris pop back there? Who might be potentially take over running back to? He's never took any returns in his college career. So I don't think that's going to happen. And then you have players like Brandon White, the wide receiver out of Hawaii. He's only took two returns in his higher collegiate career. One last year and one the year prior. Isaiah Williams coming over from Texas A&M, the only transfer player to follow Colin Klein, has three returns in his short collegiate career. But it's only those three returns are only for seven yards. So is there production there? Is it enough production to take that step forward? Is it somebody else on the roster that's going to step up? That'd be a big question that I'm going to pay attention to heading into fall camp. Who's going to take some kick returns? And of course, that is a very important thing to pay attention to. Because as we're noticing here, although going back, Bryce Norberg got one kick return for a touchdown, there was plenty of times where he turned that ball over and put them in a completely different mode for battling and potentially losing football games. And it doesn't even go up, Bryce Norberg, just him alone. The first play in Dublin for the first potential play in Dublin after a defensive stand, Dylan Edwards fumbling the punt return and puts Iowa State in great field position. Right? So there's a completely different aspect that needs to be focused to improve special teams this year. And I think they are taking a very, very solid focus on doing that, making sure they're good at all three facets of the game, offense, defense, special teams. And unfortunately, it just That means that certain players are going to feel left out. And in this case, where it would normally just be, I'm entering the transfer portal, we get the report of somebody leaving the team with some unfortunate words that surfaced across social media as well. I don't think this is anything to really get more into. This is probably the last time we need to have this conversation about it. Again, I don't think this means Colin Klein's losing the locker room by any means. You'll probably hear that from a couple of trolls on social media. I'll be completely honest, I initially thought that could be a case on the Jimmy Rogers Iowa State side until I dug into it a little bit more. I think it's just the way that college athletics is built right now, where it is turning more into a business rather than a program of tradition. It's just unfortunate. And a lot of people who have been around this game for a long time find it very unfortunate. But it's just the way that this sport is evolving. And some people are going to find they're on the short end of that stick. On the other side, let's look at the game. We'll look more into what these depth chart battles might actually look like. Who's going to battle for what position, what should we pay attention to as we prepare to get ready for fall camp to long summer. And we can kind of set ourselves up for a nice series where we do positional breakdowns over the next couple weeks. We'll do that next right here on Lockdown Kansas State. But first the NHL playoffs are here. The NHL playoffs have been super fun so far and there's been plenty of game sevens. And every shift has mattered. Every moment has been intense. Now that we talked about special teams a little bit, let's just take a holistic approach and look at this entire roster. And can I just talk about like what battles are you excited about heading into fall camp? I think we'll do some deep dives into these positions in a later episode. But I figured as we head into the weekend, this would be fun to think about maybe has some engagements and comments on the YouTube. So if you're listening and you want to drive into the conversation or ask some questions, please drop a comment on YouTube. You're listening and audio, you can always see me up on Twitter, or you can join the conversation and hop on over to YouTube and leave a comment. First and foremost, I still think the offensive line is going to be such an interesting development heading into this year. You have John Pass Story who I think is going to be your solidified left tackle. And that might be the only one that you really feel 100% good about from last year's roster. Right, there's still some other interesting names you'll find out like George Fitzpatrick. Can he take that next step? Can you get back on the field after everything that happened last year? I certainly hope so. I certainly hope we get to see him at least play this year. I don't know if you can go to the fact with him even starting just because we don't know what his status is going to be. But after hearing Chris Klein and last year talk about how he was stealing the left tackle spot from now John Pass Story who is the only one that feels like a solidified spot from last year's roster. It makes you wonder the good old what ifs and what that offensive line could have been early because it definitely improved over the season. But there's a lot of room to grow this year because there's a lot of things that you have to replace because of players leaving in the portal or in eligibility reasons. I think John Pass Story is set to have a really good year though. And I think he might be the next name that you hear that finds himself with like Sam Heck and Cooper Veevey in the NFL. He has that opportunity to do so for sure. I do think the left side of the line will be the strongest part of the line because I do think Tanner Morley is going to fit in at left guard. And he's huge. You've heard me talk about him on the show. I think he's exciting. I think he's a great piece. I had the opportunity to watch a good amount of Colorado State football last year and they might not have been the best team last year. They did fire their coach in Jane Orville. But Tanner Morley was never that issue. And of course he dealt with some injuries as well. But when he was on the field, he was electric. And I'm really excited to see what he can do inside this offense with hopefully some better talent around him on that offensive line compared to where he was at Colorado State. And I think just being next to John Pass Story will do that alone. The center conversation is always fun because we've had great centers over the last five, six years. It feels like it's been like that as a mainstay. But this year, you entered this season with, I do believe, a question mark at center. Now, the coaching staff has felt really good about players like Delvin Morris that could potentially take over as the starting center. And that's what I'm going to run with as who I think is going to be there. But of course, there's some other pieces that could maybe fit in. And then of course at the right guard, he had Charlie Adams, the transfer. And then of course at the other tackle position, I think right now I would give it the Gus Hawkins. And again, what happens to George Fitzpatrick? What happens to some of these freshman players like Oliver Miller, you know, Chase Duarte, the transfer from San Diego State who follows the offensive line coach Mike Schmitt over from San Diego State. There's a lot of interesting pieces on this offensive line for sure. As we're speaking of trenches, let's stay with the trenches real fast and let's talk about the defensive line because I think that one's going to be fun as well. You know, you have some other transfers like Camari Burns coming over, you know, who sticks out? Does some of the mainstays that stayed from last year like hold them bass? Does he get a little bit more playing time? What kind of rotation are we going to look at defensive tackle? And then of course the edge rushers, can they take that next step up? You're losing huge production from Toby Osum-Sami from Chidiobias are both going to the reigning national champs in Indiana. But probably the most exciting piece from the transfer portal in Wendell Gregory is sitting right there. Can Wendell Gregory take a jump up from what he was at Oklahoma State last year to being a mainstay in not only just the big 12 picture, but the country picture is one of the best edge rushers in college football? You have another transfer portal edition in Elijah Hill. Can Jordan Allen take that next step up? He was electric last year. I thought he had some really nice progression in the right way. Travis Bates is one of my favorite players on the roster. I think this edge rushing unit can be really fun. I just wonder how it all going to gel together. I'm really interested to see. And of course we're going to pay attention to it and talk about it when the game's finished and start going. What does snap count and rotations look like, especially for that defensive line on the edge? I do think that's going to be something to pay attention to very early. Maybe not the Nichols game because that game might not give you a true full picture. But I do think for the other two non-conference you might get a better idea of what this rotation might look like as long as they're all healthy heading into big 12 play and potentially heading into farther. You know conference championship games farther than that. Hopefully that's something that could be on the belt for Kansas State. And then we'll end this one. Maybe we'll talk two more, but I think we need to talk about the cornerback position as well. I have been a huge fanization rich for this past two seasons. Really since his coming out party in the bowl game against Rutgers two seasons ago. I thought he really had the opportunity to shine. And last year he proved to the old defensive staff that he was reliable. And he might not have been the shutdown corner you were looking for. Maybe he wasn't the number one corner. Definitely let up some catches and passes. But when you go back to those snap counts. You go back to the fact of looking at his progression scores or the case you want to look at advanced details. I think they sound rich has the opportunity yet again taking another step forward in twenty twenty six. He hardly left the field last year on every defensive place. There was multiple games where he played every single snap. And I do think that you're going to see that again as a mainstay on this roster. The biggest question is was it because of Zayshan rich they believed in him. Or because they didn't believe in the rest of the corner back staff around him. That is the biggest question that I have entering this year. What does the new defensive staff believe about these corners. And that's something that they're having me focus on. Right. I mean you have coach Peterson who is very involved with the secondary. You know that's the case. And you bring in some transfers. Caleb Patterson. Jason Pravard. And then you know there's some interesting pieces. There's definitely some interesting pieces for sure. Donovan McIntosh returns. Out of all those players who's your CB1 who's your CB2. I think it's a competition that will only make that unit better. And that's something that I'm hoping that we don't have to have too much of a concerning conversation on heading into the year. Because I feel like for the last two seasons. Even though we have provided NFL level talent inside the secondary. There has always been at least one conversation. Even from some of those said NFL level caliber players. I know there was a conversation at one point saying that Jacob Parrish wasn't doing his jobs in the secondary, his final year at Kansas State. And look what he's doing now for Tampa Bay. I'm hoping that we can get past that this year to where they can solidify themselves as a solid unit where they're not something we pinpoint and point at saying that's why they lost a football game. I certainly hope that's the case because that wasn't always the reason last year when they went six and six on the season for sure. I think this is going to be really fun to pay attention to. We're going to break down every single position over the next couple weeks as we prepare for fall camp. We got a lot of stuff coming up on the channel so make sure you stick around. We have me talked about wide receivers to the way I want to because I think wide receivers, although I do think that the unit's loaded. I think it's going to be loaded in a really interesting way. It's not going to be your same old J-spright. Brown is number one wide receiver who really steps up there who can make Avery Johnson. That's a great thing. I think there's a lot of stuff to talk about on this roster that we have any scratch this surface on. So we have a lot of good stuff to talk about over the next couple of weeks. But before we head out, let's talk about some newcomers and goers. We have a decommetment for the 27 class. We have a new Juco edition for the class of 2026 for this roster. We'll talk about that next to finish up this show right here on Lockdown Kansas State. Welcome back to the show. Thanks for making your first listen of the day. If you haven't already, hit that subscribe button. We are growing. We really love it. We're really close to 2,000 subscribers on YouTube. Really appreciate you stopping by and we are getting record breaking numbers for the off season for audio numbers at Lockdown Kansas State. So if you're listening, you are not going unnoticed. Believe me. I actually appreciate audio is more than you know for sure. Actually, I dropped audio episodes earlier than YouTube. So if you're waiting around for YouTube episode, head on over to audio and check it out because they dropped a little bit earlier. Sometimes as early as midnight central time during those days. So if you're waking up and you're looking for a little lock down Kansas State action, it's probably sitting in your audio feeds. There has been a D commit for the 2026 class and it was the very first commit for Colin Klein for the class of 2027. And that's not as he pitched forward the cornerback that will be decommitting from the program. And this one seems a little expected after you kind of dig into the details a little bit. Now we talked about this last week how we fought Colin Klein is absolutely cooking with this program. But not we're in the summer. Now that we're in the conversation of there's no spring practice. You find out that coaches need to figure out what they need. They have a better idea of their roster looking forward to 2027. Who might not fit the bill? Who might might do they need to replace a lot faster? Who do they think is going to be a sure fire thing at the end of the season to hit the portals? We need to make sure we focus on those positions. People can come after certain players. But when you look at the Pometo high school kid in pitched in this one right here, his recruitment was very closely tied to defensive back coach Marcus Woodson. This comes from our good friend John Grover at Go Power Cat dot com. And you know that makes a lot of sense that maybe Pitchford be committed because Woodson of course left to go be the new coach coach over at Old Miss his former school. So maybe Pitchford goes and commits over at Old Miss. I did see that he's already getting some conversations with Boston College. Boston College is doing some big time things. They're trying to really move that program in the right direction. I've noticed that Boston College has been in a ton of conversations this year. Some that have been tied to Kansas state players as well in the recruiting trail. Kind of on the same course of action. So we'll see what happens with Nazi Pitchford. But as of right now, he has decommitted for the class of 2027 for Kansas state, but you can't rule him out. You can't rule him out for him. Potentially they come back, right? Because you just had a player in Jones, the four star defensive tackle that decommitted in 11 days later committed back to the state. I'm not sure if that's going to happen with Pitchford, but I think we have to make that a little caveat for the entire 2027 class and maybe for the future of all recruitment classes the way that and I'll in things work that it could happen. It could return. Not expecting it to, but you never know. And then the wrap today's episode up a JUCO safety is entering Kansas state's program and will be on the 2026 roster. This is the third JUCO edition since spring ball ended for Kansas state. And this one will be Damian Miller who's coming over from Mississippi College, I believe. I just had it up. Yeah, Mississippi Community College Southwest Mississippi Community College, safety Damian Miller. And when you look at his numbers, when you look at his, you know, his, his, his height and stuff like that, depending on where you look on articles or stat sheets or rosters. He's either six, three or six, four. I've seen six, four. I've seen six, three, one 95. He has three years of eligibility left. A lot of people think that he has the opportunity to maybe fight for some playing time as early as this year. He put a quote out to rivals when he did commit over to Kansas state and said, quote, they said I'd be a fit. I would fit perfectly in their defense, especially with my long arms and being tall. And my ability of being physical, the chances of me playing right away are very high. Interesting. Interesting. Wonder if that was just a recruiting pitch or if wonder if that was something that was a legit conversation. That's something that you have to really pay attention to. How much words do those mean? And because other prospects pay attention to these, you know, other prospects pay attention to. Hey, this guy said he's going to get playing time right away and then he never did. I could hurt down the road. So it makes you wonder how he's going to be right off the bat, but very physical guy, six, three or six, four, depending on where you're paying attention to. He had visits to schools just like LSU before he committed to Kansas state. So it's not like he was only being sought after from one power for school. He was being sought after by the SEC. And he was in Southern Mississippi Community College. So he was down in SEC country and Colin Klein and coach Peterson stole him away, got him over to Manhattan. So that should be exciting stuff as well. This is interesting that you're adding some extra junior college pieces heading into fall camp. It shows that they want to add a little bit more depth. It shows that maybe they do believe that they need a little bit more rotation and pieces like secondary of safety, like the defensive tackle, adding the Juco. Addition of Elijah Jackson just a couple weeks ago and then even adding a tight end in Owen Harrington, who's going to be more of an inline type tight end, but still adding that type of depth pieces shows that maybe some of the class of 2026 or even the class of 25 that stuck around this year might not be ready for that next step yet. Still need a little bit more development or they're just looking to take that next step forward. I think Colin Klein is not going to be satisfied with just saying this is a development year. I don't think Colin Klein is going to be satisfied with finishing six and six the way that this schedule looks right now. I think this is a head coach that wants to get this program back to its glory as fast as possible and keep it there. And I don't think that is competitive as I've heard from Colin Klein and listeners every day or so this show know about Colin Klein probably a little bit more than I do. He's a competitive dude, a very competitive guy and listening to him on pressers going on other podcasts, things like that. You can tell he wants to win. You can tell he cares about this program probably more than 95 to 98%, maybe even 100% of the other coaches inside of college football because of the ties he has to this organization, the ties he has to this university. And I don't think he wants to just have a just the six and six record the show that we're building something here. Maybe a seven and five to show that we're a little bit better than what we were last year. I don't think he's looking forward to that. I think he wants to really prove that he's changing the program that new old school, bringing it back to being a big 12 contender year in and year out. Who's to say that can't happen as early as this year? I'm not. I'm not going to say that whatsoever because I believe it could definitely happen in a dog eat dog conference like the big 12 anything. Anything is possible. That's going to wrap it up for this episode of lockdown Kansas state. Make sure you hit that subscribe button. We are growing every single day. Got a lot more coming for you next week as we do positional breakdowns.
