Back in the late 70's when Wazzu had one of the premier turf grass programs in the US (90% of bluegrass seed is produced on the Palouse), the field was planted with 'Cougar Bluegrass', which was a hybrid from the breeding program. I know that the field was replaced with artificial turf sometime in the 70's, because when they dug up the grass, I was there to get a truck load for re-sodding the lawn at the rental house I was denning at (for a nice discount on rent I might add). There was even a processing mill for students to train on when harvested seed heads were brought in during the Fall Season. That turf was a thing of beauty and could be cut to varying heights so as to slow down those speedy RB's from the California schools. Unfortunately, it was very expensive to maintain, required a lot of TLC, and tended to turn into mud/frozen tundra in the late Fall. None-the-less, it was a great learning tool for aspiring professional groundskeepers, of which Ol' Wazzu produced many.
