I’ll say this: Georgia State building an athletic department is one of the more fascinating experiments in college athletics. There really aren’t many comparable institutions. Structurally, only a couple of universities—New York University and Temple University—even resemble Georgia State, and neither serves as a model for building a successful FBS athletic program.
That’s part of what makes this series so interesting. There isn’t a proven blueprint to follow. Georgia State is writing one.
If I had written this series three years ago, my conclusions would have been much different—and probably much more negative. But over the last three years, enough pieces have started to align that the university’s direction is becoming easier to see. Leadership has become more unified, long-term priorities have been articulated publicly, and investments have begun to move from discussion to planning.
Still, none of that guarantees success.
Plans on paper don’t win football games. Vision documents don’t fill stadiums. Renderings don’t build facilities.
Ultimately, this entire series comes down to execution.
Until Georgia State starts producing wins in the standings, puts more fans in the seats, and cranes begin appearing on the skyline around its athletic facilities, the vision will remain just that—a vision. The foundation appears to be taking shape. What comes next will determine whether Building GSU Athletics becomes the story of an ambitious plan that succeeded or another unrealized opportunity in the heart of Atlanta. My plan is to continue doing what I’m doing and making it public, but more on that tomorrow. Thanks for the conversation, I’ll talk gsu athletics any day anytime.
