I was perhaps least connected to Walden out of any ISU FB HC since Majors due to having moved out of state, no ISU games on TV and before internet. By all accounts from those I know who had personal interactions with him, he was a great guy. I did watch his teams play twice at Rice in 1991 and 1993. They won the 1991 game 28-27 on a patented late onside kick recovery that resulted in the winning TD. I cannot recall who his ST coach was but STs were generally a strength of his teams at ISU. In the 1993 game at Rice, ISU got blown out 49-21 and Walden lost his marbles over a questionable call and subsequently lost control of the team during the course of that game. I knew then it was over for him at ISU although he was retained through the following winless season in 1994. The 1989 team he coached to a 6-5 record is one of the best offensive teams in ISU history with QB Bret Oberg, RB Blaise Bryant and WR Steve Lester. The most memorable game was a 43-40 loss to OU at JTS where STs cost the upset win. The lack of University support during his tenure was appalling and it took Gene Smith to fix that although Smith should have hired Joe Tiller to replace Walden instead of Danny Mac. https://youtu.be/s_4e5bQvaFU?si=-2PdRjkzTX4oWF1S
