I think Americans in general, not just sports fans, have gotten way too entitled about hearing the personal details of people’s lives. There is a too common sentiment that “you’re a public figure, that’s the price you pay”. I disagree. If you’re a football player and it has to do with football, even a locker room issue or money demand, sure. But family and truly personal matters are none of our business. That said, I think it might save everybody a headache to try to head it off at the pass a bit to prevent the usual board speculation. Perhaps just adding “from what we understand, it’s a personal matter outside of football, not a holdout or anything of that sort”. Maybe add a timeframe for when he’s expected back if one is available or simply add “he is expected to be back with the team at some point during fall camp”. Falls under a similar category to the board moderation y’all are unfortunately tasked with. You shouldn’t have to do it, but might prevent more unnecessary speculation and especially player bashing that tends to happen when the board jumps to conclusions.
