It's honestly pretty hard to tear, especially in athletes bc of the rate of tendon stiffness that comes with the kind of loading that they tend to do within workouts and such. I can imagine that if you manage to completely rupture one it could be a long road back, and yes ligaments (bone to bone) and tendons (bone to muscle) are different.
