Totally disagree that we would have all schools getting paid the same, in fact without a conference structure and lacking any other substantive organization (NCAA is a joke) we would have a complete free for all with top programs signing for broadcast rights with individual networks, secondary programs grabbing residuals, and the majority of programs getting nothing except what the programs who have contracts pay them to schedule. The end result would be a small number (20-50) of programs with the resources to play high level football, a bunch of programs heavily subsidized by their schools trying to hang on and pretend like they are big time but nobody believes them, and a bigger number of schools either choosing to drop down into something more closely resembling FCS/D2 or dropping football all together. I think that this is what we end up with eventually anyways except that those top schools will have agreed to join a governing body that controls those media rights and distributes the money among the upper level programs in a fairly balanced way, leaving the rest of college football with some scraps. This will require some enabling federal legislation that also provides anti-trust exemptions and exemptions from certain labor laws and responsibilities, maybe even limiting liability for long term injuries and other consequences of playing high level football and other sports. The big money schools would prefer to keep the number of participants on the low end meaning bigger slices of the pie for them but they will end up closer to the top end because they will need schools from certain states to get the votes to pass the enabling legislation. The dissolution of the existing conferences as select teams move toward joining the top money league will allow them to exclude certain member schools without the cost and burden of officially kicking them out of the conference. We saw this already with Oregon State and Washington State left holding the PAC name and logo and not much else.
