You are entitled to your opinion, but imo you are ignoring half the equation and have credited the wrong player with earning the spot through hard work.
Let’s start with Cryer was brought in to be depth and to back up Smith. He was never brought in to be the starter.
Then, Smith needed surgery and missed the entire spring, so Cryer “busted his butt” and EARNED the right to open fall camp as the starter. Instead of “busting his butt to win his job” Smith decided to start missing practice and becoming such a distraction that Sark had to fire him.
So not only did Sark not bring in someone with more experience to crap on the hardworking returner, but your hard working returner wasn’t willing to work hard enough to earn his spot back.
