Army West Point Football Preseason Update — August 26, 2026 — 12:58 PM ET I checked the latest reports from West Point and the Army athletics site. The overall news is fairly encouraging as the Black Knights move toward their September 5 opener against Bryant. Injury situation: I am not finding a publicly reported major injury to a projected Army starter coming out of fall camp at this point. Army does not publish the kind of detailed daily injury report you might see in the NFL, and Jeff Monken is generally cautious about discussing injuries during camp. So absence of a report shouldn't be interpreted as every player being 100 percent healthy. However, I found no confirmed season-altering injury among Army's principal players in the current reporting. Army has deliberately spaced practices—two practice days followed by a recovery day—to help players stay healthy during camp. Cale Hellums remains QB1. There does not appear to be a quarterback controversy. Senior Cale Hellums, who started most of last season, is back running the offense. Monken specifically referred to Hellums as Army's starting quarterback during camp. Sophomore Ethan Washington is listed behind him. Hellums' experience is particularly important in Army's option offense. The offensive line may be Army's biggest preseason strength. Four starters return: Henry Appleton, Paolo Gennarelli, Brady Small and Teddy Williams. That's an unusually experienced foundation for an Army offense. The 2025 line helped Army rush for 3,485 yards while surrendering only seven sacks, best in the FBS. Brady Small is especially important. The senior center has started every game since his freshman season and is one of Army's three captains, along with long snapper Owen Walter and safety Stephen Nnadozie. Small is also on both the Outland and Rimington preseason watch lists. Godspower Nwawuihe is a player to watch closely. The sophomore is positioned to be one of Army's primary weapons in the running game and has already been named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list. The preseason depth chart has him at one of the primary running-back positions. Army held another significant scrimmage at the renovated Michie Stadium on August 22, so the staff is now getting close to transitioning from camp evaluation into Bryant preparation. My read: Army appears to be entering the final portion of preseason camp in good shape. The biggest positives are stability at quarterback and tremendous experience on the offensive line. Most importantly, I cannot find evidence right now of a major injury that materially lowers Army's 2026 outlook. I'll do my best to follow major injuries, depth-chart changes, quarterback developments or other news that changes the Black Knights' outlook are what matter—not every little camp note.
