Colorado added AJ Smith as assistant quarterbacks coach after he coordinated a St. Louis Battlehawks offense that averaged 21.2 points and more than 300 yards per game this spring.

Smith uses virtual-reality reps to let backup quarterbacks view the first-team offense and practice progressions, including accelerated playback intended to slow down live processing.

Colorado's young quarterback room consists of projected starter Julian Lewis, Utah transfer Isaac Wilson and freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne.

Smith said all three quarterbacks have shown strong daily effort but still have individual weaknesses under development, leaving backup readiness as an active preseason project.
