Then I would expand the marketing department, find any way I could to double the budget and hire young, hungry, fresh, driven people who can think outside the box and connect this community with our teams. Connect with the media, connect with businesses, connect with fans online, connect with families, with students, with kids. Marketing has needed a complete and utter overhaul for years. Strip it down and then hire people who give a $#!+ and spend like you give a $#!+. It’s like we don’t believe we’d see the ROI on the money and time spent but I guarantee we would if we hired the right people. SDSU barely sees a blip on the consciousness of the SD county community. As an Aztec fan I’m so tired of it. To be honest, I feel like the best football content comes from the desk of our head coach, which is sad. For instance, a very tiny example (there’s hundreds), but there are these really cool, well made episodes called the Climb about Aztec football on YouTube. They all have like 250 views. What are we doing. We’re making decent content but we have no concept of reach. It’s not just about a winning team and ticket prices. Those things matter but if we don’t create awareness and overcome apathy with great messaging and advertising an entertaining product, then people won’t even know about the team in the first place. Rant over. Couldn’t be more on target. Seems easy conceptually, hard in practice. But needs to be done.
