FIRST QUARTER
Miami won the coin toss and took the ball to open the game, and it seemed like the Redhawks were in great shape when local product Scoop Smith returned the opening kickoff 55 yards into Pitt territory. But the Panthers' defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out.
After a punt, Pitt's offense took over at its own 20 and converted its first third down when Mason Heintschel hit Ja'Kyrian Turner for a six-yard pickup on third-and-6. Three plays later, the Panthers were in another third down with third-and-11 from their own 44; this time, Heintschel stepped up in the pocket and connected with Censere Lee for 31 yards.
Then, on second-and-2 from the Miami 17, Heintschel made another connection - this time with Malik Knight, who made the catch and glided to the end zone for the first touchdown of his Pitt career.
PITT 7, MIAMI (OH) 0 - 10:06, 1st quarter
Pitt's defense pitched another three-and-out after the touchdown with a short pass, a two-yard run and an incomplete pass to get the ball back. A deep punt put the Panthers on their own 11, but passes to Lee, Blue Hicks and Knight got the offense out to midfield, and on third-and-5 from the 50, senior running back Justin Cook took a handoff, found a hole to the left and sprinted for a 50-yard touchdown to increase Pitt's lead.
