My rewatch observations for game 2
Summary
QB/OL: In the first drive you could tell that Entz had keyed in on the counter pull.
- In the first drive you could tell that Entz had keyed in on the counter pull. Entz is nobody's fool. He's had a lot of time to think up some things he can use based on his time here. Fresno had like 8 in the box and if we showed our tell for the pull everyone blitzed. Ever since that first drive we switched out of whatever the tell was and we are going more power and straight ahead or slants stuff. And we look better for it. O-line getting blocks and pockets in pass protect after the first drive where Thunderbird was keyed in. - I'd mentioned to GM that Coach P was going to attack the box with these safeties because that's there strength and you could see it early. - I'd also mentioned in my Gale 1 rewatch notes that we need Thanos because he had something nobody else has. Jide is showing he can do it as well. Get in on the QB as soon as the balls snapped there, flushing him into our ends or nickel blitz. This is what it looks like when a QB learns early that he's in danger on every play. That FSU QB was sped up from the first play on. He missed a ton of throws because we had a guy in his face and he wasn't interested in keeping the ball. He was hell of antsy all night. - A rotation of Marcellus, Chasin, Urlacher and Walker are on for the 3rd defensive drive. To that point it was 0, 2, 7, 17. - on that third 3rd and 12 play at 7:23 of the second quarter Jide breaks through a double team for an almost safety USC is rushing 3 against 5. When's the last time we got heavy pressure rushing 3. On the next play we get the safety with Jide flushing the QB out of the pocket right into Urlacher.and the Fresno QB looks totally fried mentally. - Fresno came out physical and tried to bully but they just kept losing ground to USCs physical superiority. - The WR all catch, run after the catch and block with physicality. The rotations of our D-LINE, WR, and RB rooms are, dare I say it....elite!? - I think Miller is going to have to get used to his weight for a while before he can find that extra gear he once had. I think he'll eventually find it but even so, he's a plus bell horse style back ala Darius Taylor from Minnesota. - On the score before the half SC has 3 TE in on the goal line punch. 23, 88 and 19. - Tackles look good. JT and Elijah. - I've been fooled before but this really does look different. Tons of posters talked about how tough Fresno St was and is. But USC took there best shots and just kept grinding Fresno down. Is this team tough?! We won't know completely till Oregon. But it looks good right now. - Second Safety, same story. JIDE comes thru immediately and flushes QB into blitzing nickel - Jonas looked good. Comfortable. And a solid arm. - Winfield . He had 7 (8, because one was called dead but Winfield was in and would've blown up the play) snaps and could've had 4 havoc plays in them. I remember thinking some guys are just better game players then practice guys. If he can give you 15 max effort snaps a game. Him and Tom Tom gonna make sure there's no relief for opposing OLines - I'm interested to see what sorts of arguments the naysayers talk. This was a complete performance on a lot of levels. It's all we wanted to see from this game and more. -
