Noah Fifita continuing to evolve as quarterback
Summary
Noah Fifita returning as Heisman-caliber QB; same OC (Doege) consecutive years; Arizona in rare position.
Arizona is in a unique position in college football in that it is returning one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Noah Fifita.
"It's amazing to be in a situation where you have a Heisman caliber candidate quarterback returning," Arizona head coach Brent Brennan said. "I just think that's rare and really, really special. As you guys know and what he has done in his career here and who he is a young man, we're so incredibly fortunate to have Noah Fifita be a part of our program."
For the first time in his college career, Fifita will have the same offensive coordinator for consecutive years. Ideally, this leads to more progression with not only Fifita, but the offense as a whole.
"I think that's huge for our whole offensive football team, not just Noah," Brennan said. "We've talked about his relationship with Seth Doege a lot before. I think that's also a really critical factor in Noah choosing to come back. I think that is one of those things that doesn't get talked about enough.
"This young man continues to choose the University of Arizona and he does it time and time again. His relationship with Coach Doege is fantastic. Noah is an absolute sponge. He attacks the learning part of it, which is great because he is always pressing Coach Doege, so their relationship is a lot of fun."
Fifita has spoken highly about Doege in the past and the trust built between the two last season should only help.
"He's a player that continues to grow and evolve because he does attack the process with such diligence," Brennan said. "That part is really fun to watch. It's fun to see that relationship with Noah and Seth.
"Even today in practice, if he makes a mistake, Noah turns around and he is telling him what it was before Seth can even get it out of his mouth. I think that continuity and consistency in leadership within a football program is absolutely critical and I am grateful we were able to keep as many of our coaches intact here and move forward together as were were able to in this offseason."
As well as Fifita played last season, there is a belief that he has plenty of room for improvement.
"I think he would tell you there is too," Brennan said. "Every person has a chance to grow and improve. If you don't have that mindset, you're playing the wrong game. Noah is going to continue to accelerate that. There's new players on offense, so there's a lot of chemistry that needs to be built up there too. That's one of the things that over the next four or five weeks we're going to see happen."
