Rewatch notes: What stood out after a closer look at the season opener?
Summary
Pick/market: I went back and watched KU's 51-6 win over Long Island again to take a closer look at the performance.
I went back and watched KU's 51-6 win over Long Island again to take a closer look at the performance.  Let's get into what caught my attention... -KU had to knock off some rust on the opening drive. The game began with a nice catch-and-run from Nik McMillan to get a first down. From there, Isaiah Marshall had a nice hole to hit at the line of scrimmage on an option play. Keaton Kubecka didn't engage on a second-level block and his man is the one who made the play on Marshall. There was a lane for Marshall behind Kubecka if he engaged and pushed the player away. On second down, Yasin Willis was quick to hit the hole while following Calvin Clements and they got tripped up. On third down, Carson Bruhn didn't block his man on the outside and the screen pass to Dylan Edwards was blown up. Should it have been a PI against LIU on the 4th down? I think that could be argued. But KU didn't execute crisply enough on second and third down, and that's what led to the turnover on downs. -The defensive line was dominant from the get go. The Jayhawks moved the line of scrimmage upfield and forced LIU to play in a crowd. Several players got in on the action. I want to fast-forward a little bit to the first defensive drive of the second quarter. Leroy Harris III basically forced a three-and-out by himself. He had a TFL inside the tackles on first down and had a second TFL in the flat on second down. He then slipped as he broke free from an offensive lineman and forced the LIU quarterback to scramble and throw the ball away. Harris was dominant. He showed the talent that had people in the program feeling it could be a breakout season for him. The key now is being a dominant force every game. -Defensively, KU played 4-2-5 the entire game. KU used some different alignments for the defensive line and linebackers where the defensive line shifted some. But KU didn't go to its odd fronts at all. I bet we see those return next week.
