BC:Offering freshmen & sophomores often does more harm than good
Summary
Offering 14-15 year olds harmful; club/grade-level systems create 15-year-old 8th graders; parental culture amplifies unrealistic expectations.

(original post) I would agree w BC…… 14-15 yr old kids got enuf to worry about these days then comparing CFB “offers” w each other….. let them grow up a little ... show more Just a quick note: Your point stands however, while 14-15 is the normal age in our minds for those grades, the kids I see in HS sports are often 15-16-17 in those grades. We have one kid that is within 9 days of aging out of HS sports. Yikes but, true. I’m still in the mindset that if they’re really good, they are ready at a younger age. What is so silly with youth sports is club teams going by grade level instead of age. We often see 15 year old 8th graders. Like a good amount. The same parents pointing to their child‘s learning development as the reason for their 15 year old 8th graders are typically the same ones flexing their child’s athletic prowess and a portion of them the ones talking about college offers. This is why BC doesn’t need to bother with Freshmen and Sophomores. The parents. It’s a gross subculture. It extends to some HS coaches too. These kids shouldn’t be worried about college offers at such a young age but, their parents have often sold out their kids learning opportunities for sports and it’s all the talk- (uncommitable) offers. On our HS football team, we played another school that touted “offers” for pretty much every starter. Their coaches were obsessed with it. My son made a really good point about one of the kids at our school saying that he hopes his teammate does get an offer to a college because it might be the one thing that makes that teammate attend college and get an education.
