The good, the great, and the even better: Why Oregon State's loss to Houston was nothing but encouraging
Summary
QB/WR: There’s a lot to like here, and your points capture it well.
There’s a lot to like here, and your points capture it well. From the outset, this game felt like an ESPN/Houston love fest. ESPN had former Houston star Andre Ware on the call, and they even brought in Kelvin Sampson to hype the Cougars.
The most egregious part, though, was the officiating: Houston’s defense was allowed to mug our receivers all game, and the spots on Beaver ball carriers were consistently terrible. How many first downs were stolen? QB Braden Atkinson scrambled for what was clearly a first down, only to have it spotted two yards short. Later, a shovel pass to TE Temple on 3rd-and-2 picked up the first down—until the ref marked it a yard short. Both of these resulted in 4 and 1 plays that came up short for the Beavs and altered the game. Anyways, moving on. Who knew Hatcher would get demoted to a short-yardage back? Our WR group showed up big, though—Xavyion Noland especially flashed his speed and athleticism. TE Eric Olsen is a weapon. Braden missed a 50-yard touchdown to Hampton that would’ve made things interesting. Finally, Braden switched up the snap count in the second half and repeatedly drew Houston offside for free plays. Atkinson looked like a 5th year senior out there. Overall, I’m fired up about this team!
