Syracuse blows out New Hampshire in season opener
Summary
Injury: Syracuse football has started the 2026 season in the win column.
Syracuse football has started the 2026 season in the win column. The Orange dominated New Hampshire 66-3 on Saturday inside the JMA Wireless Dome. With the victory, Syracuse starts the year 1-0 and will face California in the Dome in week two. That game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.  This game marked the return of Steve Angeli, who missed the final eight games of the 2025 season due to injury. He was superb in the opener, going 20-29 for 263 yards and three touchdowns. It was also the debut of Vince Kehres' defense at Syracuse, which allowed less than 200 total yards and only three points. That included five sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries. One of those recoveries was returned for a touchdown. Keyshawn Johnson led Syracuse with 2.5 sacks while the interception came from defensive tackle Rashard Perry. Linebacker Zyian Moultrie-Goddard was the beneficiary of the scoop and score.  The game was all but over early, with Syracuse scoring touchdowns on six straight possessions after punting the first time it touched the ball. Freshman running back Shavane Anderson led the way with three of those touchdowns in the first half of his collegiate debut. Tylik Hill, who started the game at running back, added 68 yards and a score of his own before intermission.  The third quarter started with the Syracuse defense getting a stop and blocking a punt that resulted in a safety. The offense, leaving its starters in despite a 40-plus point lead, was unable to score. That includes failing on a fourth and goal from the one. Late in the third quarter, Syracuse cornerback Chris Peal was ejected for targeting despite the replay showing him leading and hitting the opposing player with his shoulder. The good news is that a change in the NCAA rules means he is no longer subject to a suspension for the first half of the next game.  The Syracuse starters stayed in for the first possession of the fourth quarter, with Angeli leading a drive that would end in Umari Hatcher's second score of the game. Hatcher finished with eight catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns.  Backup quarterback Amari Odom capped off Syracuse's scoring efforts with a touchdown pass to Daunte Bacheyie once the reserves were inserted into the game.  The Syracuse offense racked up 464 yards of total offense including over 194 on the ground and 270 through the air.  SUPPORT CUSENATION.COM SUBSCRIBE TO CUSENATION TO ACCESS TO VIP ARTICLES AND THE VIP MANLEY ZOO FORUM FOLLOW PUBLISHER MIKE MCALLISTER ON X (FKA TWITTER) FOLLOW CUSENATION ON X (FKA TWITTER) FOLLOW CUSENATION ON INSTAGRAM LIKE/FOLLOW CUSENATION ON FACEBOOK
