Offenses can absolutely play vanilla, your observation is completely misguided. The run game isn’t simply, my 5 guys block your 5 and a “good” line will always create a huge hole for the running back. The fact that we threw for 350+ yards is also probably a clue that Texas st made the decision to stop run and risk the pass. For a team who’s only chance was to get the ball, control it, and outscore you, that’s not a surprising strategy. The last thing they could do was allow their defense to stay on the field for long grinding drives. And as for protection, arch got sacked once and that was on him for holding onto the ball.
I don’t think the Texas line will be dominant, but that has nothing to do with what I saw yesterday, and i do think they’ll be better than last year and good enough for Texas to be a contender. The run game last year wasn’t simply that we had a poor line, it had just as much to do with the fact we had a fledgling qb that defenses didn’t fear, TEs that were not great run blockers, a lack of outside weapons that defenses didn’t fear, and a stable of productive but non-explosive RBs. The running game will absolutely be better this year, not just because the line is improved, but we now have a qb performing at a top tier level that must be respected, better run blocking te’s, elite outside weapons that open space for the run game, and playmaking RBs that can make more out of nothing and turn small gains into big ones.
