The rule starts with "A ball not in a player's control......" When the NAU guy punched it out, the ball was in Gio's control. If the NAU guy touched it after it was knocked out & he was out of bounds when he touched it, the ball should have remained ours. But I dont think that happened. My guess is that nobody noticed that the NAU guy was out of bounds, so no one gave it a 2nd thought.
