I decided to shorten these a lot and just focus on one or two things:
So today I want to talk about the pass protection which is one of the major topics and I want to breakdown two sacks and explain what happened and how it can be fixed if it can at all. So lets start with the sack on 2nd and 2 @ the 2:42 mark of the first half.
(Below) This was KJ not setting the protection correctly.
As you see KJ's eyes are to the right the same place Sutton Smith is headed out. This is the hot side and Smith is the Hot read and as you see KJ slides the protection to the right which is the direction the back is leaking out. So because of this it puts Broussard in Man down at the bottom here so the man side is to KJ's blind side. If KJ sets the slide away towards the backside then #25 never gets there. Instead #25 is (Green Dogging) which means the man that would be responsible for him (the back) goes away he automatically blitzes.
This is an odd front and the rule of a half slide protection is the slide starts from the first uncovered man from the call side. So lets just say this protection is Larry which means man left and slide right. So with a odd front you will slide 4 and man 1. So Broussard has man and Clemons then starts the slide. So because of how the slide is set either the back stays in and is responsible to the (MAN SIDE) to #25 or KJ is responsible to know the back is in the concept and is hot. If he would have set the protection to the right he would have been able to see pressure and he becomes responsible for throwing the hot if he sees the pressure. So because he sets it wrong the open gap is to his backside. If you look all the rest of the pass pro is good but he must have liked pre-snap the right so he set the protection wrong.
(Below) As you see below because of the protection set the wrong direction he left a man unaccounted for in the box, This isn't on the OL this is on KJ.
What it should have looked like if KJ likes the match up to the right.
(Below) if he sat the protection away the blue triangle would be the un accounted for but now he can see him and if he pressures then he could just throw to Smith immediately or the Snag as they would high /low the Corner read.
(Above) disreagard the 25 is the only accounted for on this figure.
KJ will learn this and this comes from further understanding of fronts. Where they probably fooled him his because they were likely setting the slide away from the 3 tech and he set the man to the 5 tech. Because if you watch the previous play on 1st and 10 they kicked the front to the Sniffer and on this they kicked away from the Sniffer and it probably just confused him.
The strip Sack:
(Below) This sack is on the #64 Bryant Williams. This is essentially the same front with the protection set correctly but Bryant Williams is vertically setting the speed rush. As you see from this picture his weight is on the inside leg and the End is using a straight finesse rush and basically shows an inside move and he sets to it and then as he weight heavier on his Post leg he is off balance and the End uses his speed rush to get outside. Being the Man side he should be setting to the 5 and drop stepping and not the inside fake. On a vertical set which is demontrated here by Branham and Williams. They are vertically setting as you can see they are shoulder to shoulder in alignment and he isn't setting to him he is post setting to inside movement.
(Below) Here his weight is good is in knee over instep so he post foot is good so far.
(Below) you see the black line I drew below his feet to the angle he should be at with is kick step. As you see on the opposite side Broussard is in pretty good shape for the move and he is base is under him and he has his weight on his instep on his post foot. Williams using the vertical set is off balance right here on the jab step of the end. He kick step isn't at the angle he needs to a stand up 5 tech. So he reacts to the inside move and as you see he is not almost hoping with his kick foot and his foot isn't down in the ground like he needs it to be.
(Below) because he didn't kick step to him and he post set he can't get his chest square to the rusher and so he is reaching and not setting him.
(Below) now you see that like any good pass rusher once he gets under the bigger frame he drops near shoulder to far hip and Bryant just can't recover and you get an olay block.
Summary: Both are reasons for concern especially the technique issue of Williams against a straight speed rush knowing he will face much better speed rushes than this kid. However, its something he can get to film and figure it out and learn from him mistakes and then rep the technique so that he won't repeat this technique issue. Its fixable and he does have the talent, remember he was a highly sought after lineman in the portal.
The first one is just KJ learning on the fly and seeing different fronts and talking through some of the protections. I mean I don't know how much they allow him to set protections yet or not but D1 QBs have to be able to set their protections when they see movement and stunts to protect themselves from C gap to C gap.
While neither of these are good they are both fixable and both players are more than capable of fixing them. Hardest to fix is the technique issue of WIlliams because I promise as stiff as his hips look and as tall as he stands, I bet this has been a focus point of his development.
Hope you guys enjoy this mini breakdown. More to come
